Just got a C-Dory 2 weeks ago and already made a big mistake. Had a friend working the windlass while I was up front trying to clear a chain jam. We let some line out and the anchor smacked the front of the boat pretty good.
Photos of the damage are in my album. Makes me sad to look at it.
I think I’ll be taking it in to get fixed and then maybe mount a keel guard up there in case it happens again. I saw some other posts on here where people had used keel guard. For those of you that have it installed, how well is it holding up? |

Fixable, and a good time to learn from a mistake. It'll be good as new soon, and you will have lesson number one down pat. You probably won't need to keep a notebook of the lessons, but thanks for sharing.
I heard it said, "A wise man learns form his mistakes, and a wiser man learns from others mistakes."
I have a keel guard, but not installed yet. Hasn't been warm enough, or I have not been with the boat when it was.

I'm a fairly new C-Dory owner as well and we did the same thing one of the first times we pulled the anchor and judging by the dings in the bow, the previous owners did the same. I am looking at some sort of bow protector. I would like something like a Keelgard rubber protector, but have not found what I am looking for yet. What I have learned is to bring the anchor up slowly and have someone on deck when we do so. I also spray painted a section of anchor chain bright red at a point just before the anchor breaks the waters surface. I know when I see red chain to stop and then bring the anchor up slowly. _________________ Peter & Judy Haase

I use the Scuff Buster also. But in the boat in question, the state sticker is where the sides of the Scuff Buster go. The Keel Guard is also helpful, but we have not used one.
Only one person should be involved with the anchor. or very close co-ordination. I have seen fingers lost and arms broken with windlass and anchor drills. _________________ Bob Austin
