Hello ya'll,
Any simple ideas to protect the gunnels when hand pulling crab traps on my 19 Angler would be appreciated. It is the rope rubbing when pulling that I am concerned about.
Thanks
Martin

I dont think the rope is going to do any damage but I have seen a lot of things used. Car floor mat with hooks or ropes to hold it in place. Carpet or door mats work. You could also get the rope away from the hull with a davit of some type. If you have rod holders then scotty makes a small stand off davit that fits in the rod holder mounts. crab puller _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Line is a small concern. More concerned with the pots hitting the gelcoat. I used a large piece of neoprene rubber I bought from a marine store in Everett and two spring clamps to hold it up over the side/gunnel. Shrimp pots weigh 30# empty and crab pots are heavy/awkward when full. _________________ "We can go over there...behind the 'little one'....."

I bought a "ladner" shrimp pot from LFSI and it had a poly line wrapped around the top and bottom hoop/frames, that acts like a bumper to protect decks and gunnels. I got some 5/8 poly line and did the same thing to my crab pots, works great.

As mentioned earlier, a davit will keep the line off the boat. We throw a bathtub mat (with suction cups on the bottom) that sticks well to the gelcoat over the gunnel. Works great. Our davit mounts to a scotty swivel mount which mounts to a burnawin mount in the gunnel. |

They make a small pulley assembly that fits into a, "Fish On" pole holder bracket. It will keep lines from rubbing a grove in your rub rail insert.
I made one out of a trailer bow roller. |

The Scotty Trap-ease roller is cheap ($39), easy to install, tough, and will keep the rope from rubbing your boat. You can also buy an extender for it and it will keep your traps from banging the side of your boat. |

I have the roller and a piece of outdoor carpeting that snaps to the gunnel. |
