I have seen that before, and practiced a bunch, but obviously Joe, you have never seen me dock. Mine is the opposite, I have seen people waiting to see me dock, go up to the restaurant, order the surf and turf and come back down after dinner in time to see me step off the boat. I'm more into
S --- L --- O --- W
and precise.
But I still have fun watching other people docking their boats. Those guys are doing that with inboard engines, props and rudders, and flexible pilings.

Harvey-
Not to worry!
Just poking fun at you and your twins obsession / salesmanship!
I'm getting slower and slower at everything as I get older (76 now), and having more and more trouble staying out of my own slow way.
Must be life's own way of making the limited time left seem longer than it is (?)
Enjoyed the accounts of your recent trip north along Vancouver Island.
Take care.
Joe. |

Too bad the edited out the injuries and MOB. It doesn't look quite as moronic without the obvious dangers.
The online boater's card course that I took had what should be mandatory footage. In most of the videos of how to dock, how to use a jet ski, how to pull a skier, were interviews with injured survivors and next of kin. Not the America's Funniest Home Videos type of "funny" personal injuries, but real life discussions of the impact of foolishness and ignorace on the water.
The announcer in this video never once says "this is stupid and we should all be ashamed of watching this nonsense. Now go away." The danger is that children and infantile adults may try to imitate. No matter that is serves no useful purpose.
Sometimes I'm just no fun.

If I tried to dock like that in the areas I boat I'd get busted by the water police. I got stopped once when I was going 6 mph down the channel in my CD-22 because my wake was too big and caused some boat to rock at the dock I passed by. |

Guess you never saw how I had to bring one of the commercial boats back to the dock there: squeezed between the ferry landing and the first commercial dock, I had to do a 270º turn with enough speed on to carry the boat sideways towards the dock; once clear of our other commercial boat's stern, I could put it into reverse to get back to our space on the dock.
When I was first shown that procedure, I said, "You have got to be kidding me!" Truly, no other way to get that single screw diesel back into that space. It took some practice to get it down.
No, I was not kicking that kind of wake, but it has to be done with some speed on to get that sideways slide from that boat. Don't over-do, because you can't back to starboard.
In my time there, I showed a couple other captains how to do it, and their reaction was the same as mine the first time. Add in some wind, current, other boats coming and going, and the "toilet bowl swirl of water from the Washington State Ferry, and I never took that arrival for granted. |
