I’ve recently repowered my CD-25. The older motor was a 2011 200HPDI Yamaha. The propeller on this 2 stroke was a Yamaha painted SS 13 3/4” x 17”. Good motor that I put a lot of hours on but not particularly good at running at slow speeds. A local dealer offered me a decent trade in on a new 2017 200 inline4. I decided to stick with Yamaha as the controls did not have to be changed and service is near. I have five hours on the new power. Nice and quiet with a lot less smell. We put the same prop on that was on the old motor as the gearing is the same. I’ll be doing prop tests next time I’m out on the water. I generally run a very heavy boat.

So....for those that are using Yamaha 200hp 4 cylinder outboards, what propellers are you using? Results? Heavy or light boat? Top speed at maximum RPM with a neutral boat at what RPM?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I have a 2016 Yamaha F200XB and run a Stainless Steel Aluminum part # OFS3R13PCL200.

I got 36 mph top speed at max rpm. I'm usually medium heavy.

I'm getting 3mpg at cruising speed (18-22 mph) and 3800-4000 rpm.

I've been very pleased.

Ken

Thanks for the information. That number is for a PowerTech SS propeller that is 15 1/4 inch x 13 inch. A 13” prop seems pretty flat but you are getting good performance. Can’t argue with success.
One more question.....what is your top RPM at WOT? They say the F200XB is proped best when your top Rpm at neutral trim is between 5800 and 6000 RPM.

I think it was 5900 but it was last year when I checked it and I'm not at my Ship's Log or boat Cry so I can't be sure.

Ken
Your engine and mine are the same vintage. Hopefully someone else will have some other numbers but there are not too many 25’s with Yamaha F200XB power. There are others out there with Suzuki power (also great engines) but the gearing is different so a comparison would mean little.

My 200HPDI easily pulled the propeller I have but top RPM on that engine was 5500. It also had a permatrim that I really liked. I was told it would void my warranty on the new engine if I installed it. I’ll have to wait three years to put it on.

I’m going to keep your propeller number in mind if mine needs to have less pitch. Thanks again...hope to meet you someday. Hopefully you can make one of our CBGT’s on the St. John’s.

In my experience, you are going to want that lower pitch!

I have a 2005 CD25 cruiser. I load it medium heavy (we like to cruise - typically 5 days, and 2 people). I installed a F200XB a couple of years ago. I spent a lot of time back then trying to get the propeller right.

Right now I have a S4x14.65x15R. At WOT, on flat water, with moderate load, I get 5200-5300 RPM. I want a 13" pitch stainless prop, but I've have trouble finding one. So far it has had to be custom made. Fred Young of Anita Marie has a 13" prop with his F200XB; so I had what was suppose to be an identical prop constructed, but it caused vibration and I returned it.

The 200 HP gives my boat plenty of speed with the 15" pitch (36 mph at WOT, and 26 mph at my favorite fast-speed RPM of 4100), and I want to trade some of that speed for more power (hole-shot and wave handling).

If you found a 13" pitch SS prop that worked on my boat, I'd trade-in my 15" pitch in a heart beat.

Thanks for your information.
I’ll try some propeller tests next week. I see that Yamaha sells 4 different propellers that have 13 inch pitch. The Turbo1, Reliance, Ultima 4 and the painted SS.

Who manufactured your prop? Is it Aluminum? I’d like to see more RPM at WOT.

More to think about....

I’ll post numbers soon.

My prop is stainless. Made by Mercury (I think).

I have never found a 13" pitch SS prop that wasn't too big diameter. If you find one, let me know.

Yamaha has a propeller selection program. Take a look at it.

http://www.yamahapropselector.com/propSelector/web/

Some of the SS selections they gave with a 13 pitch are only 14.25 inches. That should fit on the F200XB.

I've tried to use that website in the past, but find it extremely frustrating to use. You have to enter your engine size, performance goals, and a bunch of other stuff before it will tell you what props are for sale.

I just want a list of all props, so I can choose. I can't find a way to make this website give me that list. Indeed, even if I answer all the questions, in about every combination I can think of, it never gives me anything less that a 15" pitch prop to look at.

Ok....try these settings.
Type boat...Express Cruiser
Outboard...200...F200...Single
Performance goal....load carrying
Performance goal recommendations....go to next step
Pitch and Rpm.......17pitch and 5250 rpm

You will then be given 6 props to choose from 2 with 14P and 4 with 13P

Happy Hunting...Tom

Thanks, I got to the page you're talking about. I guess when I put in 15" pitch and 5200 RPM, it took me away from the lower pitched props.

C-Otter propeller report. These numbers are with the same prop that I had on the 200HPDI 2 stroke. A painted Yamaha SS 13 3/4 x 17 pitch.
2000RPM. 7.5 mph. 4 mpg
4400RPM. 22. mph. 2,5 mpg
4500RPM. 25 mph. 2.5 mpg
4600RPM. 28 mph. 2.6 mpg
4800RPM. 30 mph. 2.7 mpg
5550RPM. 39 mph. 2.0 mpg. WOT

Conditions: very light chop, perfect conditions, fresh water, less than 100 above sea level on the St. John’s River, Florida. Full fuel 100 gal to start and full water packed for a two week trip with 9.9 kicker, big cooler and fishing gear. A normal load for us.

Observations: Slower out of the hole than the old 2 stroke but I expected that. A lot quieter at displacement RPMs and my wife liked the fact that the “stink“ as she puts it was gone. My Garmin fuel flow meter is inaccurate at less than 2 gph so no numbers for displacement speeds. My fuel flow at 25mph is a lot better than with the old engine. It was more like 1.6 mpg. It made me sick to look at it when I’d lead a group. So I would turn it off!

Basically the propeller seems to be doing well. I’d like to get a little more RPM at WOT so may look at a 13 or 14 pitch.

Any thoughts? Thanks Tom

Hi Tom!
No one else has said so, I will: The perfectly respectable WOT range for your motor, according to Yamaha, is 5000-6000RPM (same as my F150's). You admit you will always be running a 'heavy' loaded boat, so aim low, but over 5,000 (you're already better than that @ 5550rpm, in fact at the midrange of the motors 'ideal'). I think a lower pitch will just get you a lower WOT speed at the same MPG (maybe a tiny bit better low end 'grunt' getting on plane that you would not notice).
The cheapest Yamaha replacement props you're likely looking at run $500...spend that money on gas for the kicker, and how many more trips downriver would you guys get over your remaining lifetimes? Spend it there! You are so close to ideal you should be loving it!
If you absolutely MUST waste the estate on props you don't need (like I do), get SOLAS aluminum jobbers for under $105 including shipping from Iboat.com and experiment with them.
Yamaha lableled jewelry should be passed on.
Just Another County Heard From,
Cheers!
John
