I would be interested in hearing from some of the chemists and technical folks on board about using that on the boat and especially about getting it on the trailer (Galvanized in my case). I like the spray bottle mix if that isn't damaging to gel coat, glass or trailer. That would be great especially for the up north ramps where there isn't much in the way of wash down access. Looks like that and a bucket and big sponge could do the trick.

OK,I get to not mix with chlorine of any kind. I went through an MSDS.
There is some wording about warning about contact with certain metals. Of course it does not say which or what finishes.
So, More specifically my questions is two fold. 1. is about mixing with hydrogen peroxide -- if there is an advantage or a warning. and 2. What are the expected consequences of getting it on my Galvanized trailer, ( if there will be damage and/or if it is rinsed off right away, would it not be a problem.

I haven't mixed it with anything. The non-bleach toilet bowl cleaner makes the hull shiny and white as new straight out of the bottle. It's 9.5% HCL so rinsing any metal should be fine. I haven't noticed any corrosion to metal in several years of using it. I clean one section at a time so the cleaner only sits on the hull for a few minutes before rinsing. |

Where the U-Tube guy was mixing it with the hydrogen peroxide, he could put it on in a spray bottle. That's cool, especially for use in some of the remote launch areas. Get it (green stuff and scum) and then rinse. Pretty slick

I have a local sign company that makes numbers/stick on vinyl names.....he had some chemical in a spray bottle that made short work of the glue left on the boat after the vinyl came off.
I had taken a name off the boat previously and it was an effort to get it off... |

I use MEK or acetone.
Heating area with a heat gun before the solvent can help too (although this can make the solvent evaporate more quickly). |

I prefer not to use MEK or Acetone on the gel coat. Both of those will soften the gel coat. Goo Gone works well, but so does WD 40. Goof off is a little harsher. _________________ Bob Austin

A hair dryer and plastic scraper with WD40 should be all you need to remove boat numbers. To remove larger decals I use an eraser wheel sold by Amazon $10. It is attached to a variable speed cordless drill. I remove the left over adhesive with WD40 or Goo Off. |

The gelcoat around where the old lettering was is slightly lower and the old lettering area is proud of the surrounding gelcoat.
I have read to use 600 grit sanding the old lettering down to the existing gelcoat level. Is this advisable?
Thanks everyone. |
The "ghost" letters will gradually fade. A good aggressive compounding and waxing of the boat will help it blend in. I am not a big fan of wet sanding, when you can get buy with a less aggressive compound. I have had that same issue on boats where I have changed the name. After a few months (maybe years in some cases) the old ghost will be gone. |
