Looking at the dates for Isle Royal, and reading the first post, it says beginning on July 5th and lasting for about 2 weeks. Assuming we actually head over on the 6th, I'm assuming that means we are looking at being back to Grand Portage on the 19th or 20th. Rosanne will not be coming with me for Isle Royal, but I will meet her at her dad's in Bloomer between Isle Royal, and then our trek to the Apostle Islands. She is off in July from the 18th. Just trying to get a more solid time frame, knowing that cell coverage does not exist once we get to Grand Portage, nor for the most part, in Isle Royal. I think at this point, I'm going to plan on being back at Grand Portage on the 18th or 19th, weather permitting, and then plan on launching at Sand Bay Campground for the Apostle Islands a day later on the 19th or 20th, and staying out until the 29th. Again, anyone else that would like to join us is welcome. Also, as of now, my plans are to leave home on the 4th and spend the night at my father in law's, then on up to Grand Portage on the 5th. I should be there early afternoon. If the water is calm, I may decide to head on over to Windigo. Wondering what time the Clow campers plan to arrive at Grand Portage? Colby

Weather permitting, Camp Clow participants will head for Grand Portage on the 5th. Our arrival should be mid-afternoon, but that is always subject to change. We set aside the two-week period to give folks a planning window. Given past experiences on the Island we'll put together a loose float plan and see which way the wind blows. Flexibility is the key to successful cruising on Lake Superior.

Called the Marina at Grand Portage today to check on fuel. They sell 91 octane pure gas. Said no problem parking 7 or so trucks and trailers. Slips are hard to come by. Only one or two normally but we can head out after launching. Michigan licenses for fishing are available.

As far as things to bring. Bug repellent, food for three weeks, needed medication, peanut oil for fried fish, Mepps number 5 for pike, spoons for lake trout and an adventurous attitude. 😇
Wouldn’t be long now.....Tom

Just shy of two weeks away, and looking forward to joining all at Isle Royal, then on to the Apostles. Already have my Michigan Fishing License as well. Piece of cake on line! Northern Wisconsin has some road closures around the south side of Lake Superior. due to all the rains. It looks like highways 2 and 63 have some closures. For the Clow camp coming up, if I read the 511 data correctly, as of today it looks like 2 is closed west bound from 63, and just south of 2 on 63 there is a closure. For my routing between Bloomer and Little Sand Bay (Apostles) I'm planning to use between Hwy 53 and Little Sand Bay, Hwy's B, 27, H and 13. This basically goes thru Brule, Port Wing and Cornucopia. I don't see any closures using the 511 website on that routing, but will check with the Highway Patrol in the area before I leave. However, that is routing I will take between my Isle Royal and Apostle Island trips. I don't see any issues for me coming up to Grand Portage, using Hwy's 53 and 61. If anyone else knows of road closures in this area, please share here. Colby

The marina office has some fishing tackle, but not a lot. I didn't drive past the marina/casino last year, and not sure what exists in the main town.

Go to marine general. com and order on line. They are a local tackle store in Duluth. Top notch place.

Safe travels Alain. Unless you go thru Utah or states west, I don't think you'll have any watercraft inspection stations to be concerned with. But if you have a bilge drain plugs, make sure they are pulled. Also, if you stick to I35 and Hwy 61 in the northern part of your travels, you shouldn't have any problems with road closures. (Been lots of rain up north, and it's washed out a few roads in Wisconsin on the south side of Lake Superior. Colby

Yes,Tom that would be great if you did pick an xtra one, i was joking when saying i was fresh out, I never owned one and would not know what they look like, I'm not much of a fisherman especially on lakes, I do have a pole and a Michigan permit though.
Colby, road closure updates are appreciated.

I’ll pick one up for you today. Lots of the bays in the park hold northern pike and they will bite on the Meps. For lake trout I’ll have to pick up some spoons in Grand Portage. I’ll be heading for Camp Clow on Thursday.

Lake Superior here we come .., Tom

Here's another link to ascertain road conditions from the recent storms.

Not being one to leave things to the last minute (although, sometimes I should.. Mr. Green ) I just got my boaters permit from the Houghton Office. They are not doing it online like they did last year, not yet anyway, however I did email them an itenerary and talked to them briefly on the phone. Since we all know flexibility is the key when dealing with weather and such, this is more of a formality than what we may actually end up doing. However, this is sort of close to what we did last year, so seemed like a good plan to use this year. This is what I used:
July
6 Windigo
7 Hay Bay
8 Chippewa Harbor
9 Rock Harbor
10. Tobin Harbor
11. Passage Island (Anchorage 71)
12 Belle Isle
13-15 McCargoe Cove
16 Todd Harbor
17 Windigo.

As last year, I'm sure things this will change, but it's a start...
I'm still planning on getting to Grand Portage by noon on the 5th, and possibly heading on over to Windigo then if the water is calm. See everyone either at Grand Portage or Windigo.

Also, for what it's worth, here is the bottom page of the Boaters permit:

1. Never feed wildlife. Seal and secure your food, trash and
scented items to prevent access by animals.
2. Carry out all of your trash. Do not burn or bury. Do not
discard in pit toilets.
3. Do all washing and bathing at least 100 feet away from the
water. Keep all soap, including biodegradable soap, out of
lakes and streams.
4. Fires are permitted only in provided grills and metal rings.
Use only dead and down wood.
5. Dogs, cats and other domestic mammals are prohibited on
the lands and waters of Isle Royale National Park. ADA
service dogs must be approved in advance.
6. Purposefully or unknowingly introducing wildlife, fish,
insects and plants to park lands or waters is prohibited
7. Quiet hours are between 10 pm. and 6 am eastern time.
During this time generators are prohibited. Special rules
for generators apply in some locations (see 2018 Boaters’
Guide for details.)
8. Boaters must be aware of and comply with regulations for
Quiet/No wake zones.
9. In campgrounds, tents/hammocks may only be pitched in
designated sites. Tents/hammocks are prohibited outside at
shelter sites. Hammocks prohibited inside shelters.
10. Cross-country camping requires a special permit.
11. Camping groups (7 or more people) must have advanced
camping reservations and follow itinerary specified on the
permit.
12. On Lake Superior, a Michigan fishing license is required.
Consult current Michigan Fishing Guide for fishing
regulations.
13. On inland lakes and streams, use artificial lures and
barbless hooks only.
14. Transporting fish or fish parts to the park for use as bait is
prohibited. Only fish and fish parts that have been caught
in Isle Royale waters may be used as bait. Organic bait of
any kind is prohibited in the park's inland lakes and
streams.
15. Cut fish remains into small pieces and dispose in deep
water (>50 ft depth in Lake Superior or as deep as possible
in inland lakes.) When disposal via boat is not possible,
move at least 200 feet from the campground and throw
remains into deep water.
16. Defacing shelters, picnic tables, etc. (including carving and
other graffiti) is prohibited.
17. Disturbance, removal, or possession of the following is
prohibited: wildlife, wildlife parts, plants, rocks and
minerals, archeological and cultural resources.
