I can get an IPAD 2 with wifi 16-32 gb that is refurbished for less than $150. I wondered if it would be a good choice for running one of the navigation programs. What do you all think and recommendations are wanted.

Thanks.

Or you can buy a brand new Samsung Android tablet for about the same money that runs MxMariner which is a very easy to use nav app.

I use MxMariner on Android tablets. If you get a less common brand you can get a good one for under a hundred bucks. Try Dragon Touch, Asus, or even refurbed brand names. If you search you can find a good deal. I just got a new Samsung 7" tablet for $95 on eBay.

Another vote for Android. I used an older Nexus 7 tablet for Navionics on all of my C Dorys (7 inch). Here's a refurbed one for $110.

Last year I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (10 inch) and run Navionics on that. It's awesome! HUGE SCREEN. Here's a new one for $220.

Both of the tablets use no data because they have internal GPS. Just download the app and you're done. Easy.[/url]

If you're interested I could ship you my Nexus 7 with the Navionics app (USA HD gold version $50) on it for $75. It's in perfect condition . I can also give you the big RAM mount for no charge. Let me know. I was gonna put it on Craigslist this week actually!

I like iPads for navigation and other uses - BUT, that wifi only model is not what you want for navigation. It needs to be wifi AND cellular so it has a GPS chip (wifi only models do not have those). With wifi only, you would have to buy and attach an external GPS.

We have an original iPad that my wife uses around the house, mainly due to the slower speed and inability to update. You can get too old to keep up with the regular iOS and app updates.

I would see if you can find at least a 3rd generation iPad with wifi and cellular, or budget prohibiting that, look for an Android option.

Good point about making sure that you have the GPS chip in the iPads. Not a problem for Androids. AFAIK all Android tablets have GPS chips.

While most Android tablets have GPS, it is not 100%. You need to check to be sure. I have a big one we use for watching videos on the boat that does not have it.
