My favorite bait is Salmon. To catch crab you'll want a saltwater fishing license and I think it is a few dollars more for a Pacific Salmon Stamp(goes to salmon enhancement efforts)

If you bring a rod you can jig for salmon off the powder warf (dock) on the east side of James Island (check out the satellite view on Google maps). I would use a smaller 2-3 inch buzz bomb or similar lure. Almost nothing beats a salmon head and spines for crab bait.

Chicken backs are the next best thing if you don't catch a salmon for the bbq.

North Saanich Marina is another choice, a little further from the airport but not too far.

Thanks. Guess I need to look more into that BC Licensing for Crab and Salmon, and take my bigger rods with me also. Use to use Halibut heads in Alaska when I was up there in the Coast Guard.

Halibut heads are the best, couldn't imagine using them in Alaska! You must have pulled some amazing traps full of carb. There are some spots to get halibut near Zero rock in Haro straight (south of Sidney) but I've never tried fishing there!

It is a problem. Prices, when we checked last year, were often in the $200/mo or higher range. I checked every port I could find with a ramp from Prince Rupert (even a few in AK) to Olympia that didn't require ferry service. I threw out some because they had a serious open water approach, like Point Roberts or Blaine, and most others because they were just expensive.

We were planning to be out for 3 to 4 months, so storage fees for us were more of a factor that for those who are making a shorter trip.

We settled on Bellingham (too bad, storage was free the year before) and a remote storage lot (~$100/mo) that was about a 10 min Uber ride from the marina. I wouldn't want to make that approach in nasty or windy weather either, but it is relatively protected most of the way. It is also a nice marina with a couple of restaurants within walking distance - good for decompressing after the long drive.

There is a lot to do around Bellingham.

Thanks John. The gal at Cap Sante Marina I spoke with also suggested I could look at Mini-Storage places around Anacortes. I emailed with one but they said their units are full at this time and to check back closer to when we plan to arrive. Cap Sante continues to make the most sense to me, and I'm somewhat familiar with the route out and back to there. Not to mention the ease of using the sling launch and keeping the trailer out of the salt. I suspect long term parking is an issue everywhere when it comes to safety and cost. Colby

Hi Colby,

I left my truck in Cap Sante's parking lot the last two summers. Just ask at the marina office

Did they charge you for parking at all? I'll have both my pickup and my trailer, and was told that they still charge $5/day. (That's also what I paid a few years ago, but was only out for a week then.) Colby

No charge for me, truck only. Maybe the trailer makes a difference. $5 per day is pretty easy to take. More costly further north.

I'm thinking the same thing about the price. It could be worse. The lot there works out pretty nice. Good security and right next to the marina. I might see if I can't work out a deal with them since I'll be there for a month. Maybe just a straight $100 charge or something. $5/day seems pretty normal for many places. Colby

John-C

Are you saying that the Bellingham storage yard now costs? I'm talking about the one where you could leave your truck/trailer across from the launch ramp. It's been free for years now.

What storage yard did you use?

Last year we were told there was a new boat builder that needed the lot next to the coast guard building to transport boats to the ramp. They no longer have long term parking, although we did notice people parking there anyway but have no idea for how long. I doubt those folks checked with the office (we know of one person who did that, but later moved his rig - have idea if they actually tow people out of there).

We used Pantec Mini Storage (360) 676-9330.

It is a tragedy. We parked there for over 3 months years before last without issue other than a dirty truck. It was much more convenient and free.

We launched out of Blaine on our last NW cruise...2012 I think. We left the truck and trailer at Blaine Marine Services. We had to separate the trailer from the truck for their convenience, but it was only about $100/month for both. Their lot is right on the corner where you turn to the launch ramp. That was a few years ago, but call them about current rates. We thought it was a great deal for 2 months of cruising.

If Cap Sante Marina does not accommodate you, call North Harbor Diesel ( 360 299-1907 ) speak to Robin. Storage for your truck and trailer $ 150 month, inside a locked gated ( at night ) yacht storage lot at 30th and R Ave.
Call Mike's cab for a ride from marina ( 12th ) to 30th, probably $ 5 bucks ( 360 421-3083 ).
FYI. Bellingham and Blaine can be rougher than &%^$#@.

Looking possibly at Everett now. For what it's worth, I just checked with them and their launch/parking fee has gone up to $12. That's for the launch and parking for that day. Not sure what the rate is if you park longer. Cap Sante parking is $5/day. Not sure they would be willing to work out a longer term deal or not. And when I checked a week or two ago, the outside storage companies in the area did not have any space. Colby

The last I checked and used last summer, parking was $3.00 a day at Everett after your launch.
That covers your tow rig and trailer.
