ATLANTIC SALMON released. Apparently a net holding thousands of farm raised Atlantic salmon broke due to the higher than normal tides. No bueno....

This could end up being a pretty big deal. I almost think it would be best if there were some ecological consequences from this release, because it's going to happen again, and if this all amounts to nothing it will just perpetrate the idea that net pens are a good idea.

Why they can't raise pacific salmon from the local area is beyond me. Probably because it was easier to use the Norwegians techniques with the same fish.

Duplicate post from parallel thread on same subject.

http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=25717&highlight=

The Norwegians are the ones who brought fish farming in open pens to BC waters after the depletion of their local wild fish from diseases spread by the open water pens. No the same think is going on in BC waters. See this documentary:
https://www.mountainlifemedia.ca/2016/12/something-fishy-open-net-fish-farms-destroying-bcs-wild-salmon-populations/

and see some of the 2016 travels and findings of Alexandra Morton here:
https://thetyee.ca/News/2016/07/19/Sea-Shepherd-Pirates-BC-Salmon-Farms/

Obviously there are some folks making big $$$$ in the fish farming industry and there are governments, resources and wildlife paying the price.

This is not the first time this has happened. A pen containing Alantic salmon in Rich Passage broke open releasing a slew of fish years ago. Was no lasting effects. Put a lot of fish in the smoker that year.

Just talked to a couple guys at Twin Bridges who fished between the shore and the pens. The got 8 fish on spinners and power bait. They even got one by just netting him as he swam by.
Sounds like combat fishing to me.

I'm not a fisherman, but heard they will go after something that looks like pellets, since that is what they are used to eating.

Go for it.

That needs to be in the 2018 C-Brat calendar.

This weekend I participated in a "protest flotilla". (Sorry Tom but there is a first time for everything, and everyone should stand for something right?)
It was sponsored by Our Sound- Our Salmon and by Sound Keepers and was on the southern end of Bainbridge Island and there was a pretty significant turnout. Over 40 power boats, from a 50+ foot sailboat, several large commercial fishing boats (seiners and trawlers), many native fishing vessels including a big vessel from the Lumi Sea food processing company, lots of pleasure craft, including a few C-Dorys, and about 75 kayaks.

The C-dory in the picture, (Green stripe with the Orca on top), as far as I know has no connection with C-Brats. In fact it had engine trouble and wound up being towed through the parade, which turned out to be quite fitting as the Orca was then chasing the salmon.)

Maybe not coincidentally, earlier in the morning, (I had stayed at Blake Island the night before), a pod of Orca were spotted in the area of the fish pen farms, on Sunday morning not long before the "flotilla" was to meet. The purpose of the flotilla was to attract some media attention to the fact that the open pen fish farms need to be out of Washington state waters, like our neighboring states. It was held there because it is next to the pens that have had escapes before, and also the Washington State Governor lives on Bainbridge Island. It was peaceful, coordinated, educational and actually some fun too.

Nice find of the new pix.

Hope this works. The C-Dory with the Orca on top was a nice touch.

This comment was taken as derogatory by my friend Tom and that it meant that if he didn't stand with me he was not standing for anything. That was not my intent, but that I should stand for what I believe is right. I know Tom personally and I am thoroughly convinced that if he believes in something he will stand for it. It was meant as an apology to Tom that I was taking a stance opposite his view in this issue.

Sorry Tom, no offense meant, I respect your right to believe as you want, and to say so. I also try to keep a fair distance from political views here. Just don't think it is the place.

As to what is "right and truth" time will tell.

Funny - The current political climate is a mess everyone takes everything way to personally. Hence I will not comment with my thoughts on the article above.

I will say tho AWESOME picture - Love it!
