Last year was an odd one for Merry and me. In January, Merry had surgery on her left foot which required nearly six months of recovery. I skipped many dives to stay home with her but managed to get in some good diving with Kevin Lee during that time. In June Kevin and I made a trip to Big Sur. With rough seas, fog and near zero visibility I came home with no photos to speak of.

In August, Merry and I returned to God's Pocket in British Columbia. A thick plankton bloom prohibited me from adding any photos to my Best of 2017 collection. The rest of the year offered weeks of good conditions at home followed by bad weeks.

In December we enjoyed some of the best visibility we had seen in a long time. Unfortunately we were unable to get out during the final week of the year due to thick fog around Palos Verdes and the west side of Los Angeles. Still, I managed to squeeze in a hundred dives and get some decent photos. I hope you enjoy them.

Wonderful photos! Thank you so much for sharing! I send the link to my grandkids. Your photos show the beauty of the sea at the macro level--something that many miss!

Here's to a better 2018!

I'm curious. Water pulls the color out of objects as one goes down, yet you have great color. How deep down do you go to get these shots? Do you do much enhancing afterwards?

What cameras do you use? Those are great shots.

Very cool sir. I love the way that we all find different niches in boating....Some folks fish, some dive, cruise or live aboard. And some may incorporate all of them.

On a side note: Do you think all these beautiful underwater treasures can be found in New England waters as well or is it just Pacific? Just curious. I've seen lots of diving flags around Cape Cod so I know that they are doing "something" underwater! I wonder what that "something" is !!!

I use a Nikon D3x in a Subal housing with two strobes. The strobes light up the subject, giving the natural colors...mostly.

There are many beautiful animals off Cape Cod, but I think most divers there are grabbing lobsters.

We have done dives from Alaska to the S. Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii, Central America, Mexico, the North East, the East and West Caribbean, the Med and Baltic. All of them have some of these beautiful small creatures. Few people pay much attention to them. However, S. Calif. has a wonderful variety which these photos and the excellent photography show so well.

When I started free diving at age 10 one of the groups which interested me the most were the Nudibranchs. Getting this quality of photo is not easy and I put these right up with the best professionals.

2017 was an amazing year for Linda and I, we spent January, February and March in Sarasota Florida, sunny south rv resort, and decided not to drive our motor home back to somerset ky, but rather list it for sale, which we did and sold it two weeks later. We decided to sell our Nordic tug and Boston whaler and did so. Last on our list was our Lake Cumberland lake home, and closed on that December 17. We replaced the boats with a 2008 Sea Ray 185 sport with 62 original hours and in new like condition, also purchased a brick ranch on five acres with two Newer metal outbuildings. That was certainly a busy year! Lol. now looking forward to this years up coming boating season and cutting some grass! Lol. only regret was not buying a lottery ticket!!!

Phil, that is a nice compilation. Great shots with super color and detail. Nice slides to video and good music. Wish I had your kind of talent. Thanks for sharing.

2017 was a good year. 1K mile mc trip, and Canada Birthday at Buchart Gardens fireworks for highlights.
