hey Mark, Thanks for posting that. I have friends who were on the river there and witnessed that one. The video is worse than they described. Shows the power of a prop -- notice the prop fin bites into that aluminum gunnel.
And Thanks again for what you do. (Been following the Memorial for Deputy Dan McCartney.)

My waters. I remember when this occured. Very rare around here. Our waters just are not very crowded except near 10 during the Buoy 10 season. Larsen is going to catch a lot of heat on this one. _________________ Dave Kruger

It goes to running a motor vessel without seeing where it is going! This is an example where a person who was "disabled", was running a boat from a seated position, when he should have been standing, since he could not see ahead.
I have seen a number of vessels running on auto pilot where there was no one visible at the helm. Some have crashed--some got away with it. Also people driving while intoxicated or under the effect of legal or illegal drugs.
I guess the moral is that driving a boat is just as serious business as driving a car (or flying an airplane-driving a train etc).
My assessment of the video is that the folks in the boat would have either had very serious injury or have been killed, if they had not bailed out. As it is, there were injuries, and psychological issues to those in the boat....The moral there is be aware of what is happening around you even if anchored or fishing... _________________ Bob Austin

This video sure makes one want to keep away from Bayliners and stick to C-dory's. Not sure that is what that hull is but looks like the way a lot of them run bow up with poor visibility. |

From the test accompanying the video:
Quote: | "....A GoPro camera mounted to the Weldcraft fishing boat captured the frantic seconds as Larsen’s Bayliner Trophy motorboat speeds directly at them. McMahon can be seen waving his arms and yelling in an attempt to get Larsen to steer clear -- just before the trio jump into the water." |
And that B boat owner is sitting down, operating his vessel, in a direction where he could not see the water and at a speed where there is no option but serious damage if any contact is made. That is not just stupid, it is total disregard for others. Felony endangerment, could have been fatal.

Don't so much think it's any particular brand of boat. More likely one of the following are always causes: ignorance, complacency, lack of responsibility or shear stupidity. The gov't calls it "human error".
Like I said: amazing no one was killed. |

It sounded like the skipper may be handicapped, and has to sit down at the helm, and has a mobility scooter on land. Also, from a sitting position he cant see where he's going over the bow. Can't make this stuff up.
He's lucky he didn't kill anybody. The fact that he is pleading not guilty, and is calling the accusations against him "Fake News" seems appropriate.
