A bit of humour to get you to appreciate the warmer south. Glad I don't live in Manitoba.

Ron, It's so warm down here in the NonTropical NW tip than when I went for a motorcycle ride yesterday (New Years Day 2018) I had to stop and take a swim. But before I got into the water my brain got unfroze, I came to my senses and just held the towels and blankets for those who were suffering from the near heat exhaustion of only 35F and 38 degree water. WOW, that was a close call

-35C here on the ranch in Alberta on New Years eve. Today it warmed up enough that I had to take my tuque and gloves off while weaning bison calves. Still too much ice to take the C-Dory out. _________________ Peter & Judy Haase

Most of December has been colder than normal for us too, with no end in sight. We've hit -37F straight temperature so far. We could use a little global warming, at least locally. _________________ .....and remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. |

Jason, here in your sister city, Stoughton, WI, we've been double didgets below zero a few nights and barely positive single didgets during the day. And we've probably only seen about 4" total snow fall since the season started. Looked to be a brown Christmas, but got the first few inches of white stuff the day before.... Season's like this make me want to move south. Except that the south had snow before we did this year... Colby |

Hey Peter, I got one for you.
How many folks here know what a tuque is?
I grew up in Tuque Country and can help translate for those of the "Southerly Land"
Try knit stocking cap, or watch cap.
Bet those bison calves are fun to watch. Stay warm.

Quote: | .... it was -42 Celcius with windchill.... |
Now, this is one of my hot buttons these days......windchill pretty much don't mean shit!
Actually, it does mean something: windchill is what air feels like on bare skin if there were no wind. That is, -10° windchill could actually be +15° with some wind. Not many of us go out stark naked on cold days and nights. Windchills can be useful if you know at what temperature frost bite occurs on uncovered faces, fingers, etc, but most folks have no idea about frost bite temperatures.
Why does it bug me? Because these days many in the news media report windchills only.......I suspect because the number is lower and sounds more dramatic. It is so misleading. Often reporters don't even mention if they are quoting actual air temps or windchills, so you don't know. Some will report both, but air temps and wind speed would be more useful.
Even more insidious are the millions of folks who actually believe that somehow, in spite of physics, wind actually causes air temperature to lower (as measured with a thermometer); in fact, if moving air did anything to air temperatures, it would raise them ever so slightly. Thermometers could care less how hard the wind is blowing.
If you wear clothes, especially a wind proof jacket, windchills pretty much mean nothing. Not that wind doesn't make clothing less effective, but please just give me air temps and wind speed. I can figure out the rest!
