I got stopped by the local water police. I did not have a boater card (had the wrong effectivity date in mind). I got a citation and had to go to the county court.

However, the LEO who stopped me said that if I completed the course and got a card that I could show the court when I appeared, the case would probably be dismissed. I did the course and had the card when I went to court and the case was dismissed.

BTW, when we got stopped, one of the officers was all about doing the inspection and writing the ticket. The other one spent the time asking me about my boat and C-Dories in general.

Harvey...you know the elitists in Seattle/King County know more than EVERYONE ELSE. Just look at all the "good" they've accomplished. Homelessness is non-existent, drug use eliminated, crime all but gone, traffic flowing smoothly, taxes lowered, unemployment is zero...why it's Utopia... Rolling Eyes

I'm the latter. But I know a cop who would give The Pope a ticket. He once cited an ambulance for speeding...I kid you not.

According to the interweb it is $100 + costs, which in my area would make about $180.

Wait a second - they charge you to write the ticket? Like a service fee? For doing their jobs? Awesome!

Kalifornia has plenty of money---- we just need to stop the train and stop supporting the illegals.

Politic over--

As a californian planning to retire in Seattle/ Pugeout Sound area this isn't sounding good! Am I going to run into the same problems I'm running away from?

In short, yes. Seattle dreams of being San Fran north. King County of being Kalifornia north. PM me and I’ll tell you all about the insanity 🤙🏼

Does the Coast Guard enforce state boating laws, or would it be up to the local cities and counties to patrol, ie carding people at launch ramps.

How many miles out does state jurisdiction go? If they apply maritime law to states, as we do with nations, where the boat remains the teritory of the state it is registered in, will my boat be a little bastion of California law when offshore from another state?

CG may ask for boating card in State waters. State waters vary, but fish and game may ask for card out to state limits. Many states LEO only patrol near shore and inshore. For example FL in the Gulf of Mexico is 9 miles, Atlantic is 3 miles for State waters. Usually reciprocal between states for boater cards. Calif. is 3 miles, but remember the offshore Islands, and “Headlands to Headlands” rule. (Was applied for Gambling ships.)

I left Calif. in 1992, for obvious reasons. Established residency in Texas, cruised the PNW for 4 April thru Oct. seasons, and finally bought property in FL. Pensacola—still 4 seasons, No state income tax. Property affordable. Good cultural activities. Compact areas, miminal traffic. Low crime rates...

They had mariners licenses. And with regards to Joe, it was that idiot third mate's fault. There is one reef that you have to avoid and he couldn't do it.
