I have some corrosion around the hinges, lockset and latch on both the door and frame. So I plan to remove them this winter and have them re-powder coated.
Has anyone ever removed an all glass door? I'm curious how hard it is to remove the frame, given whatever sealant was used. And where should I take the door to have the glass removed and then replaced after power coating?
I'm trying to gather as much info now so I have a good plan formulated for when I can get started. I've emailed and called Diamond Sea Glaze, but they haven't been any help. _________________ Rick & Shirley

Have you checked about how the glass has to be removed and reset? Recently I thought I might have to take one of my widow frames out. It turned out I didn't have to--fortunately, since whatever was used to bed it was really stuck to both the window frame and the gel coat. My boat was a late 2006, but has the Starboard door. It is very possible that the bedding compound would have been the same as my windows--since the Reynolds owned the company thru 2007.
What I had done in the past is to leave frame in place--mask well around it. Sand all of corrosion off get to bright clean metal--clean with acetone. I would then use Pettit Metal Primer 6455/044. , and a two part epoxy primer. In the past EZ Poxy (one part) did have a white, which was close enough that you could not tell it was not original--3 coats of that. _________________ Bob Austin

Thanks, Bob. I have a schematic from Diamond Sea Glaze showing how the glass is laid into the door, and that's why I was curious who to take it to that could remove and replace it.
If the sealant is that strong between the frame and cabin, I might just leave it in place and paint. I was really hoping to powder coat, but it might be more work than it's worth.
Thanks for the info on the paint and primer. |
