USS MIDWAY TICKETS for the San Diego Gathering

OK, Skippers and crew:

I will be taking orders ONLY via email from now through Monday 2/13/06. Please email me, sneaks@c-brats.com with your order.

Tickets will be $8.15 per person and $6.50 per "youth"(ages 6-17). Regularly $15 and $8 respectively. Senior tickets are available at the Midway but they are $10, so there's no advantage. These tickets also have no expiration date but please limit your order to just this gathering. I can get more for future trips at a later date, but they will have to be paid up front. I'll collect from y'all at the gathering.

There is a cafe on board the USS Midway, the Fish Market is next door, and Anthonys's Star of the Sea is a short hike north.

Personal restaurant favorites/not so favorites: Anthony's has three restaurants in one: Fast food, family food, fine dining. The dock will hold maybe 4 C-dorys but is very exposed and rarely empty. IMHO the food is adequate but not like it was 10 years ago.

The Fish Market has no dock but has excellent food. Slightly spendy

Joe's Crab Shack isn't far and has a dock that might hold 4 C-22's. Fairly isolated. If you are familiar at all with Maryland crab cakes, you will be very disappointed though. They specialize in Cardiac Casseroles (much of the menu revolves around deep fried seafood.) Otherwise, the ambiance is nice and the waiters/waitresses are well trained.

See you all at the gathering!

Chris (Rana Verde) came up with an inspired idea for folks trailering their boats down to San Diego for the gathering. Most will be tying up at the Glorietta Bay marina which is about 500 yards north of the Coronado launch ramp which, unfortunately, does not allow overnight parking.

Come on down. Launch at the Coronado ramp anyway, motor up to the marina (no reservations necessary, they promise to fit us all in) walk back to your tow vehicle, pull the trailer to an Ace Parking Lot, drop off the trailer and return to the marina. There is plenty of vehicle parking at the marina, by the way.

You'll have your vehicle and your boat handy for the whole weekend in San Diego.

Don,
Where is the nearest Ace parking? Would we need to drive back to the airport area by shelter cove? I am wondering what the traffic is like for this drive but it does sound like a good idea.

Has anyone talked with Campland about camping in our boats in a camp spot? I have run into places that will let you camp in a tent, RV, or trailer but not a boat - I know! It doesn't make sense to me either. I would hate to arrive late Wendesday and be turned away.

Steve,

Here's a list of the Ace Parking lots in San Diego
Locations and phone numbers provided.

Looks like we would still have to go back over the bridge to find one.

Unfortunately, as Roger points out, you'll have to cross back over the bridge, but at least you can choose the time and maybe a few can "convoy" over for parking.

Silver Strand State Beach just a mile or three south of the marina has overnight parking but only for self contained RV's and they don't allow vehicle overnight parking. I don't know what their attitude would be about a boat trailer but doubt if Arnie's troops would allow it.

Thank you, Bill & El, but the credit goes to Google Earth. In certain areas of the country the resolution is pretty fine. If I were cruising like you two, I'd take along some jpg's of my intended route as well as the usual charts just to get a different perspective.

In the first shot of the marina below, the virtual altitude is 767 ft. In the second, applying tilt got the altitude down to 269 ft. where the "camera" is but allowed a view "overlooking" the marina as well as the entire Glorietta Bay basin. Checking my previous overhead jpg, it helps to know that there's a McDonalds, a Del Taco, Subway, and the Boathouse restaurant within an easy walk from the marina. Mr. Green

Gaining access to the "inner dock area" if one arrives from the water is not readily apparent. Looking at the tilted shot one can easily see the entrance is between two big 50+ ft. side tie pleasure boats, and those boats are easy to spot. My only regret is that the photos used are at least two years old, not real time, but the two big boats are there today.

Don, Chris-
That sounds like a good plan. Launch near the marina and drop the trailer at the nearest Ace Parking lot. That way I'll have the jeep to go to SeaWorld in.

I think we are going to try to make down Wed. evening but not certain yet. We have decided to skip Seaworld so as not to try to pack too much into the weekend.

Great sattalite views. I will probably launch and then head back over to the airport area for parking since that seems the easiest with out knowing the area that well.

Looking forward to seeing everyone,
Steve

We have a reservation at Campland on the Bay for the pop-up camper for Wednesday night. After launching, we plan to stay at the Marina on the boat. No other plans, except to see friends and enjoy the time together -- wherever, whatever.

Is there anyone in the southland that would like to try the insulation paint on their C-Dory. I sprayed a gal. in the vberth and it does keep the condensation from forming. I have 2 more gallons that I have not opened plus the spray gun. I don't think I want to go to the trouble of removing all the wiring and stuff to spray the main cabin.

I could bring it with me if anyone wants it. I would like to get some of my cost back. PM me if interested.

Parking parking parking...........................

I talked with Brien at Ace Parking today. He said the best place for us to park the trailers would be at the Petco parking lot, known as the Tailgate Parking Lot, managed by Ace Parking.
Located:

Between 12th Avenue & 14th Street and K Street & Imperial Avenue

Entrance/Exit: 13th & K and Imperial between 12th & 14th

http://www.aceparking.com/parking.htm

The cost is $3.00 per stall/day. If your trailer takes up 2 stalls- $6.00. You can pay at the machine (pay every day) or you can call him at (619) 233-6624 X 1301 and pay give him a c.c. number to pay for how many days you will be in the lot. You will need to tell him what space numbers you are in.

Roger,

Well "Ace is the Place" I guess. Too many choices for me though, I don't have a lot of patience when driving around tiny streets trying to find the next turn or tiny driveway to turn into while dragging a 25 footer around... I "had" planned on launching at Shelter Island Friday evening, parking there, then motoring over to Glorietta Marina for the nite.

To use Ace parking (Tailgate), how far is it from any of the launch ramps? Do I need to launch somewhere else?

Label me "confused from Simi" -- and that's no lie!
