These are not C-dorys but cheaper copies that were featured under another name at the Seattle boat show a few years ago. I dont' remember any kind words while looking them over and would steer clear but thats just me.

Someone slapped a c-dory decal on this. Seller is either misinformed or trying to scam someone.

Can't polish a turd.

That alone is a warning sign!

I am surprised that NMI has not contacted this guy about fraud. In the past C Dory builders have been very sensitive about knockoffs. This is more than a knock off--it appears to be a fraud. Be interesting to get the HIN on it..

I'll send an e-mail to NMI and see if they respond.

About the title....Here in Washington, our Dept of Licensing is slow to deliver the title. You get the registration right away, the title is delayed 4 to 8 weeks.

I think that Roy Toland is the original designer or builder of C-Dorys.

Another thing to notice is this boat is being sold as a 2017 and "brand new."
Thanks for helping me figure this out, I knew something wasn't right here.

I am interested in these. I remember them from the SBS, and they were pretty "lightly" made. They are not C-Dorys, at least were not back then. If I was around for a few days I would be interested in going to have a peek. It will be interesting to see if there is any response from NMI.

There are 3 boats, but only one fake "C-Dory". The others are different, shown in the pictures.

It seems that NMI does not want to build smaller boats like the C-Dory 16 so maybe they have relinquished those to another builder. If I had not been lucky enough to buy a well loved 16 I would be interested in learning more about the 18 advertised.

I wonder if Sea Skiff, or what ever this boat is--is still in business?

I could not find a HIN for a Sea Skiff built in Washington. Toland Marine was registered in 1994, and seems to have been inactive.

There is a lot of information on the C Dory sale to the Reynolds, and the fate of the C Dory Copyrighted name in this lengthy and controversial thread. by Mark Toland. It is pointed out that only Ben Toland "lost" in the law suit ref the Cape Cruiser suit by the Reynolds. There are a number of very interesting comments about who owns what rights. There was no mold for a C Dory 18 conveyed at the sale to the Reynolds (and subsequent companies?)

In another thread Mark Toland states:

Quote:

You are correct that I sold the C-Dory name to a new company that was formed to receive the assets that were purchased ~ C-Dory Marine Inc. I am not a part of that company. My old company was however still incorporated and still had assets and obligations. I do still represent the C-Dory cooperation and my title is still president. If I were to do business through this company I would have to use a DBA. However the only business of C-Dory Inc today is to protect its interests and fulfill past obligations as it prepares for its final farewell (hopefully at the end of this year). When I act in that capacity it is proper for me to properly identify myself.

I have no idea if Mark Toland is involved in this boat--but if he is--then it might be an issue of a trademark (?), vs a name...

A Search for C Dory Corporation found:
Quote:
C-DORY, INC. was incorporated on Sep 26 1984 as a Profit Regular Corporation Type registered at 25211 43RD PL S, KENT, WA. The agent name of this company is MARK TOLAND. The company's status is listed as " Inactive" now.
C-dory, Inc.'s dissolution date is Jan 02 2007

I did send an e-mail asking NMI if they know anything about this boat or the "name".

A number of companies have called their boats a "Sea Skiff" over the years. Chris Craft marketed a Sea Skiff for years in various lengths and styles. Rosborough bought the molds for his Sea Skiff in 1992 and then improved it to add outboard power and his signature pilothouse with sliding helm door. The molds were then sold to Eastern along with the 246 molds and it is now marketed by eastern as the 22 Sisu.

As noted in this thread the Tolands also made a Sea Skiff.

The boats in the add do look clean and in good condition for the price - if the pictures are current.

Regards, Rob

If I remember right, those "SeaSkiffs" were not even fiberglass but a plastice, thermal molded, and very "flexible". They did not have that C-Dory "fake" logo on the side either. That has been added since the boat show.

I saw one of these knock offs on the road recently near Shelton while on my motorcycle. It clearly had a big C-Dory decal on the side which I would like to personally scrape off. What a shame.

Greg, I'm with you. Think I'd be tempted to ask to see the HIN # if the owner didn't mind.

When I first went to the C-Dory factory in 1982 to look at their available boats my FIL, son John and Me were invited t o go on a ride out of Demoines, Wash on a 22'. The man that took us out was Roy Toland, the father of Mark. He was a great guy and gave me a lot of info on their boats. I was sold on buying one.
The next summer both my sons, FIL and myself almost drowned in a boating incident in the Cook Inlet of Alaska. We made it to shore and I exclaimed to my wife that that was my last trip out in that 16' aluminum boat. We were going to buy a C-Dory. I called and talked with Mark Toland and made the deal on a boat over the phone. It was completed in early Aug. of 1983. We drove down the Alaska Hyw. to Kent and picked it up. Mark took a personal check for that boat and I drove away. Best purchase that I ever made. They were absolutely great to deal with.
