I just bought a wonderful Tomcat but need to repower the boat. It had twin Suzuki 140s and my options are to stay with the same horsepower or go up to 150s or 175s. We plan to use the boat in Alaska and would like more power but the cost difference is substantial. I welcome any thoughts.

FWIW- I have 150's (w2500 hours) and will go with 175's when it comes time to replace. Suzuki 175 with fly-by-wire look interesting.

My Honda's have thus far been bullet proof but I'm one of those "more-power" nuts

We have Honda 135's, 1080 hrs. I have never felt the need for more power. I can do 40 MPH at sea level, and 35 at Lake Powell. What's the hurry?

When it comes to justifying more power, I can't even justify owning a boat. I generally cruise at 18 to 20 but that doesn't stop me from wanting quick acceleration or a little fun (spelled power) now and then. I darn sure don't need 400 hp in my F150 limited, but putting the pedal to the metal feels good now and then. Life is short and to to each their own even its having five 350 hp outboards on a center console. Perhaps Marc Wefing can tell us how he likes Zuk's 175's on his Tomcat?

The 140 was built on the 115 block. I have owned the 150's on the Tom Cat and a single 140 on my Caracal Cat. The 150's have a lot more power and torque. It is not a lot more for the 175's--they are really only much different at the highest speeds. Not sure you will get a lot more out of the hole, but the top end should put you over 50 mph. I could get in the high 40's with my Tom Cat and the 150's/ light boat.

Personally I would go with the 175s, and if I had won the lottery, go with the electronic controls, and the Sea Star Joy stick maneuvering system...
Optimus 360. It is truly incredible.

We have been asked about Optimus 360 [we are certified installers] and just have to have the defibrillator ready when we give the pricing. Its 15k with the digital motors and more for mechanical controls. But the good news if they are giving away the Sea Station [skyhook/position holding feature] at no extra cost. The 175s run well and dont quite make 50 mph unless light and propped for ultimate speed . We are still playing with props on ours . Sometimes top speed and practical handling props are different.
If someone wanted a really nice Tomcat with Optimus 360 , I know a place that could hook them up !
Marc

what the Optimus 360 can do with a cat.

I believe that older engines can be retrofitted, where the Merc option does require specific engines??

Does the 15 K include installation? The other question, how does the Optimus compare in performance to the other joy stick systems?

Thanks.

15k is with install and setup.
Add about 3k for mechanical engines
Still uses cables like the old school Morse and Glendinning systems .

I can understand that! I am currently putting a 425 HP 2016 Ford Coyote engine in a '51 Ford Panel truck I am restoring.
