Hi,
Here is my first drone video from my boat. Perfect weather but no salmon. The day was even better because it was a work day!!!!

I've used that function on land and was surprised at how good it worked. For this flight, I was kind of freaked out that we had not practiced a landing on the boat and had to figure it out on the fly that. My phone battery was low so it was a quick flight. We intended to do landing practice while in the slip to work out the kinks but that didn't happen!
Next time, I'll disable the sensors and just fly it into the cockpit if we are that still. Otherwise, the landing pad will be used. It was ideal conditions so we decided to let her fly!
Its a fun toy. |

good to know there are other guys to have Tomcats, like to fish, and play with toys like drones. I just got a GoPro karma and you can see my videos here:

I have now launched my drone off the boat about 10 times and I tried to land it it on a flat surface. Each time I felt like I was moments away from the drone landing in the ocean. I now feel far more comfortable having my wife catch it. We have practiced on land a ton of times, and the landing gear on the Karma is pretty easy to grab. It might harder with the mavic (it has obstacle avoidance and different landing gear), but you might want to give that a try.
A drone is like a flying blender, so you have to be pretty careful, but I feel far more comfortable landing it by hand than on a flat surface. _________________ Tim

Great drone video of the TomCat, Westie. She sure is a nice looking boat and looks great in the water! Could the water be any flatter? Wow.
I also enjoyed your fishing 2016 video. You guys killed 'em. I noticed you were catching all of your salmon without downriggers, using banana weights correct? How deep were you trolling? Very impressive haul!

Great videos of the boat and super conditions. That drone looks to be fun.
Enjoy,

Thanks for the comments! The mavic is hard to catch by hand. The karma may have been a better option for me.
In northern ca, we use 2# lead balls on sinker releases. _________________ True North

what are all of you using to edit and make your videos. So far I have the videos but have not turned them into anything yet. No experience doing this sort of thing. |

I'm using iMovie. I watched some tutorials on YouTube after messing around and it really helped. The editing of that drone clip took maybe 2 hours. I'm getting pretty quick but it's kind of become a second hobby. |

I hand catch my Mavic and Inspire all the time it's quite easy. You can leave the sensors on. Just bring it down to hand catch level and back the quad up to you and grab the front foot and shut it off. The inspire is the same you have four feet to grab then turn it off and let it swing down. I take off from the top of my Bimini. Just leave yourself a little xtra battery time for the landing. Nice video. _________________ Jody Kidd

It will if you put your hand under the body. If you reach down the side and grab the foot it won't. You do want hold it in the same spot and turn it off. If you try to move it from the landing spot it will try to move back. Hope that makes sense. |
