I asked Martin but haven't heard back so I'll ask others in the know, is there a good spot to store the truck and trailer in Comox? We're thinking of trying to make it this year but would tow to Comox and cross over this time. I know Comox has a boat launch and government dock, just trying to find out if I could store the truck and trailer for 3-4 days.

Comox has a good boat launch, and you can leave your truck and trailer there, but parking is expensive. I think it costs about $16 CAD to launch the boat and parking for 24 hours plus another $16 for each additional 24 hours. However for 4 days it is probably not a big deal.
You can launch at Union Bay at high tide and leave your truck and trailer. It costs $5 to launch and I think it is free to park. The parking lot is not patrolled, but it is close to the highway. I have never had a problem leaving my truck there.
You can also launch at Pacific Playgrounds if the tide is high and there is free parking there just outside the resort. You are closer to Desolation Sound from there.
There is a boat launch at Salmon Point but it is steep, does not have a dock, and is not in good shape. _________________ Gypsy

Thanks for the quick reply Gypsy. We launched out of Pacific Playgrounds a couple of years ago to go to Desolation but this year will be a quick trip across to Powell River and back. I think I'll call the Comox Marina for updated parking rates.
Thanks again.

Peter, if you launch at Comox, be sure and try the fish and chips at the little green trailer next to the launch ramp parking lot. Pretty good stuff, and the cook there is a 3 time circumnavigator (IIRC) and is really an interesting guy.
Parking there was not cheap, and there is not wash down facility.

Just booked in to catch up on the CBPRGT -2017 invite from Ron & Anne. Yes 2016 was great rally of CBrats. Meander-"Ron and Anne" + other volunteers + Powell River Comm. were fantastic hosts. Harvey - thanks again for your radio support in difficult following seas in Malaspina Strait. !6' Dorys are limited to 2-3' swells and we were in 3-4' ers. Flat sterns swing off course too easily, and its a bit tricky to stay stern first to the oncoming waves. Yes staying on the back of the wave is the ideal deal position however, this means the throttle in one hand and helm in the other and talking on the radio to you-- oh -yeah that's 3 hands-- LOL _________________ I'm in the third stage of life:

Well, sure glad you had 3 hands, and made it home safe. Hope we get to see you up there again. Learn by doing, and repeat the good stuff.

Hi Peter,
I agree with C Gypsy, Comox has a good boat ramp and easy parking for truck and trailer. During summer there will be several rigs parked overnight. I have never heard of any security concerns. I think the cost for launching and over nighters is a bit less than Gypsy mentioned. But it is not cost prohibitive if you are parking up for just a few nights.
Unfortunately I do not have a driveway you can use since we sold the big house. Stay in touch on dates, maybe we'll cross over together.

You are SOOOOOO Welcome. I love Canada. Grew up there (southern Vanc Isl) and over in Burnaby-New West.
Plan to be somewhere that way for the BC Party.

Hi Peter. I concur with Gypsy that Union Bay just south of Courtenay is a good launch. We've used it several times to head for Powell River and as a first night camping spot for tows North. Lots of room $5 to launch and park. Deal. Interesting history of the little place too. Pub, store and remnants of one of the really large coal loading depots of the Island. See you in PR |

Nomad is going to be out on the water one week before the Powell River gathering. We have not decided where yet. Favourite will be Desolation/Discovery Islands, or Sunshine Coast. Anyone else going to be out and about? After the PR gathering we have to head home to Comox.
Martin and Andrea. |
