I have about 200 feet of Samson 3 strand pro-set 3 strand 1/2" line and would like to splice onto 350" of 8 plait. So doing a bit of resurch, the method I've found is to tape and unravel the 8 plait into 3 strands and tape and unravel the three strand into 4, than splice accordingly.
Why do I want to you ask? The Samson 3 strand is as expensive as 8 plait and not available here locally , 8 plait is. The 1/2" line I'm using now spliced to the pro-set is inferior so would like to use 8 plait on top spliced to the premium 3 strand. At about a $1.00 a foot it all ads up.
Deep water fishing is the desire, not overnight on the hook.

Jay, Just for clarification, are you splicing

200 feet of Samson onto 350 inches of 8 plait? It sounds more like you are doing 350 feet onto the 200 feet you already have.

Anyway you do that, it is a lot of rode. For me, splicing anchor rode would be iffy, but I would guess it can be doable with good strength if done right, however that is.

Jay-

I'd try it myself, just as a challenge. (It sounds pretty difficult!)

Then, if I didn't like the result, I'd find the best professional splicer in Anchorage and let them do it.

There ought to be some good ones in a town like yours!

A photo or two of the results would be appreciated!

Good Luck!

Harvey,

Typo, meant 200' of 3 strand spliced to 350' of 8 plait.

The boat came with the 1/2" 3 strand, it's still in great shape after many years of countless anchorings. Problem is, the 1/2" 3 strand I have spliced to the Samson pro-set has never worked correctly in the windless.

I need that extra length for fishing, the 200' line plus chain is more than adequate for overnights. Also, in an emergency you need that extra length of line to keep you off the rocks here.

I prefer to drift fish but occasionally have the need to fish on anchor. Last year I decided I was going to scrap the inferior 3 strand and picked up some 8 plait.

This splice doesn't have to look pretty it just has to be functional.

I tried to have a professional splicer do my plait to chain when I ended my anchor line. In San Diego, that would be through marine supply houses. They wouldn't do it because it wasn't new line, even if the end I was using had never been used. I'd look for a splicing person (if that's the term.)

Thanks Jay. I figured, but just in case, I thought it might make a difference for those in the know who answer on down the thread.

I tried to switch to 8 plait last spring, but my windlass (Sprint) is not set up for it so I had to abandon that idea. Wanted the 8 plait for extra length. When I talked to the rigger/splicer at Fisheries, they weren't interested in doing a longer, more tapered splice like what is demonstrated here on the site, (either SeaWolf Joe, or Thataway Bob have written it up.) I had it printed off and took it over to Seattle, but the guy there was sure that his system would work. Rolling Eyes

You might try a rigging shop, if you don't find something at a supplier there.

This sounds like a milder form of an initiation project for a down stater to become
a Yukon Man.

A much simpler way to slow your boat to fish the deep is use a large drogue.

The drogue is in my bag of tricks, there are just times when hanging on the pick is desirable especially in butt country. And time when the current is moving fast and a drogue has no effect.

Joining two different style lines to make one dependable anchor rode,
by guessing or inventing the proper knot, may cause loss of the
entire rode distal to the 'knot' that cannot be fished out of the deep.

Aye.
