For the past year the map contour on my C80 has had square edges and is offset by as much as a mile. I tried a new navionics card and have gone through the menu too many times but can't fix the problem. Is there any way to solve this without having to upgrade to a new unit?

Phil,

That looks like the unit is continuing to use the base map as opposed to the chip map. When you go through the menu options that let you select the map source, does it show you the one on the card as a option?

I'll have to check when I get to the marina tomorrow. The unit came with the boat in 2008 so I don't know if it has chip technology.

By "chip map", I mean the one on the new Navionics card. I'm not familiar with the C-80, but most chart plotters have a base map and the ability to use a map from one (or more) card or chip sources. Typically, there's a menu item someplace that allows one to select that map source. Hence I'm asking does the Navionics card show up as a possible option? Because from the map on your photo, it would appear that the unit is not using the map on the Navionics card but rather the base map. This is most likely something you can change in a menu item but it could be that the card reader is not working properly.

yeah that is the base map. You either dont have a chip in the unit or its not turned on. You have been missing a lot of info.

To the left of the unit, there is a little door covering a slot. If you don't have a chip in there, you are on the base map which is virtually useless for navigation. Navionics makes chips in various formats to plug into your unit. But the will make you buy one for inland lakes or west coast, east coast, etc.

the C80 is a great unit, but you have to customize it via the desired chip maps for your cruising area.

I have a Navionics CF card for the west coast in the slot. I replaced the original one thinking it may have been a problem with the card.

I agree, what you are seeing is the base map. As Tom said, you are missing a ton of info. If you can go down through your menu, as mentioned there will be a place to turn on the data card. I can't remember exactly where, but you are looking for "system" and "cartography" signs.

I hope this helps. The RayMarine books are a pain, I know, but I love my chart plotter, and all it's functions.

You should also carefully review the procedure in the manual and possibly remove and re-install the card following that procedure. My recollection is that there's a particular sequence that must be followed when removing and installing the cards, otherwise they will likely not be recognized by the system. It's very possible that whoever installed the card in the first place didn't follow the prescribed procedure.

As stated, that is the base map - you have no cartography.

As of 2008 I believe it is still a C-80 Classic (mine is 2005). It uses the obsolete CF (Compact Flash) cards to store the cartography. This is inserted in the door on the left side of the unit. I don't remember if it is possible to insert it upside down, but it is very possible not to have it fully inserted. I would open the door and push it in to make sure it is fully seated and making contact.

Now, the only way you are going to get another West Coast CF card is to find it on the used market. Navionics has stopped producing preprogrammed CF cards. There MIGHT be an option (I think I read about it) to get a CF card adapter that accepts an SD or Micro SD card.

But honestly, the C-80 Classic is pretty much at or very close to the end of its life cycle. I am (in the process of) switching over to a PC based navigation system from Rose Point called Coastal Explorer.

here is the manual
http://raymarinec80.com/raymarine_c80_manual/

with map card. did you transfer or import to the card? it may not import it automatically

other thoughts
You may need to perform factory reset and need to backup data first to a separate memory card and do not use your map

on the flip side the unit is wacky and need to call them

m2cw replace map card and restore to factory setting which will clear all. full details in the manual

Just check the new system software v5.16. Not know what the old version was.
Best of luck

When Tim and Mary bought Wild Blue, they bought a new CF card (E-80 system) for the part of Canada where they'd be cruising. It didn't work. The system needed a firmware update to be able to read the new card.

My guess is that is what is happening with your C-80.

I haven't done it for a long time, but as I remember, getting Raymarine tech support on the phone was a very long wait process, but when I did get them (I was turning circles in Friday Harbor, in front of the ferry dock), they were helpful with a diagnosis and fix and connected me to a dealer in Bellingham (Radar Marine Electronics) who had a new map card with the update and were absolutely helpful.

It worked out that there were a couple of C-BRATS there in the store (R-Matey) who were on their way to Friday Harbor. I had the chip the same day.
