I just read the Avivq story again, and got to thinking about a few other grand adventures that have been posted over the past couple years, only to disappear into obscurity on the General Chat discussion board. The Catch 22 is one that comes to mind, as well as a couple tales of Naknek's travels. There are probably a few more buried in the 18 pages of topics in the General forum.

So, here's what I was pondering. My thought was to create yet another forum in the Pub section for just these types of stories. Call it Grand Adventures or something. The reason I am asking for opinions is because it may seem to some that we are getting the place cluttered with too many separate forums. When you click on the Forums link at the top, the whole site is indexed in a listing that spans about three screens vertically. To me, it looks easy to navigate and simple to use, and another addition to the list to sort the topics makes sense to me. But it isn't my site, so I would like to hear from all of you - both your preference and reasons.

My preference is yes, and the reasons are: a) preserve the stories and keep them more visible; b) acknowledge the time and effort the authors gave to share the story; c) encourage more of the same.

If the yeas outweigh the nays, we'll set it up and move any threads to it that will fit. If the nays take it, we won't mess with success. If there is resounding silence, well, then we will...........naw, silence is not too likely.

Now that I have your attention, if I ever did, here's another grand scheme. Bill and I talked this past weekend about a way to make it easier for people to sort the Memberlist and the Our C-Dorys list to find folks in their general area. Sorting those lists now by the Location field gets you an alphabetical listing of whatever first letter the member entered. It might be a city or it might be a state. It would be easy (for Bill, anyway) to add a separate data field to the Profile so each member could enter the state in which they reside. It will probably be one of those annoying drop-down lists that force you to find the right answer from those provided, but that will ensure that the info used to sort the finished listing is all the same. A one time entry in the Profile will make that info available to both sortable lists we have for members. The existing field for location will be left in, and the title changed to City or Region. We will also provide an "Outside the USA" choice for our members who live in other parts of the world. Of course, there won't be a rule requiring the entry, so those who like to retain some anonymity will be able to continue to do so. If we go with this, we will ask each of you to update your Profile. Or, for those who have already entered there home state, Bill or I will edit Profiles as we come across them.

So - let me have it straight out.

1) Should we create the new forum to preserve the epic tales and make them easier to find in the future?

2) Shuld we add the new data field in the Profile info to make it easier to sort the Memberlist to find people in a particular state or region (and would you use it)?

Mike, I'll weigh in with a big Yea, affirmative, on both counts.

Great idea to preserve the many great stories that have been posted and acknowledge the experience and effort that have gone into them by the writer.

I also think it would be great to have a data field that would show the membership by region or state and feel that would be a useful and convenient tool for a lot of C-Brats.

Yes to both ideas Mike, good ones...Have often recommended to new members to peruse the member list to find folks close to them, this would make that a lot easier.

Mike-

Yes to both ideas!

I had been thinking about the second one earlier, and wondered that if we had zip codes for each member, if the list could be sorted so that it printed out from the member with the closest matching code to the most distant. (I'm closer to some people in Nevada and Oregon, for instance, than some in Southern California.)

But then, I hesitated to propose another new task for Bill !!!

He still owes us his "Motorhome adventure". Mr. Green

Yah, I too go along with both ideas. Thought about suggesting the forum title as "Sea Stories" but Dusty and Charlie can tell you sea stories are a little more creative than factual, strongly resembling fairy tales, not actual narrations.

...Yes to both ideas.

One thing I have noticed is that when I wish to look for member information I need to sort the list then scroll seemingly endlessly to get to the data I want. For example, if I wish to look for data on a username that begins with 'm'. No matter whether I sort ascending or descending, I need to cycle through a number of pages to get to the information. Same thing applies to the "Our C-Dorys" listings. Is there a better way?

As a new member of this site, I have yet to learn who is putting in all the time and energy into maintaining this. Kudos to those who are. What a wonderful resource. It brought my family and our Dory together. After spending as much time as I have recently on this site, I think both of those ideas will enhance an already great site. yes on both.

Mike,

I think these are great ideas.

Bill if you need a hand with adding the field for the profiles I would be more than happy to help. Seems I have more time on my hands till a new job comes my way.
