Is it true that the bulkhead can not be completely removed all the way down to the floor? Some say it's structurally needed. However, in a 16' Cruiser this space is wide open (with the exception of the sleeping platform - perhaps that provides the necessary structure?)

I'd like to remove the 16" angler bulkhead and add a "shelf" like a cruiser, but just a shorter version. They gear can easily be stowed underneath as well as on top, and it may even provide a new seat!?

Hi James, I don't know the answer to your question, but when I was considering the same mod, I thought that little 10" bulkhead would have been a perfect anchor point for both the bench/berth as well as the new/modified helm station. If you completely remove it you are still going to need something to attach those to the hull, so why not just work with it and use it to your advantage? Looking forward to seeing your mods when finished!

You can do this and several (including myself) have. I wouldn't remove the lowest true bulkhead, which sticks up 7-8" from the floor if I remember right, however: it is definitely structural. I think Pat Anderson has pictures of this modification on in his album. It really opens up the front of the boat for easier access. I had the same shelf in mind as you but sold that boat before I could complete it. Just to confirm: we're talking about the fiberglass bulkhead which forms the dash and to which the steering wheel is mounted. The removal is only of the Port 2/3 of the bulkhead, leaving the starboard dash and steering mount intact. Good luck with this! Mike.

Here's what Pat Anderson had done on his 16 angler Crabby Lou. A few others have done similar modifications.

Wood,
What do you plan to gain from the mod? A shelve? Do you mostly fish or cruise? I had contemplated extending the entrance on my old 16 berth but I didn't like the idea of completely removing it. I thought that losing the factory shelve would be counterproductive. Extending the opening would be pretty cool IMO...
