Does anyone, besides me, know the name of this guy hauling in a halibut near Petersburg AK? The year was 1985. A very new CD 22 Angler at the time

What an evocative photo. Love the chimney -- you can almost smell the woodsmoke!

I think this is the Thistle II seen here on Page 4 of the tread "the ugliest boat ever". It looks very similar with the chimney and all. Geography is the same too.

I don't think I've ever known this boat's owner, but I've seen this one in Petersburg many times - usually near the ramp in the North harbor. I think this photo is from 2011, and I took it in part because the old boat had just been re-powered with a new Yamaha. The smoke stack is in the right place. A davit has been added. It may be the same boat. I probably have pictures (pre-digital slides) of this boat from the 1985 era, too, if I can find them.

Here's another recent shot of the same Petersburg boat shown in my previous post. It's the "Barracuda" these days.

Bill,

I think you have a very solid match there. My dad and a relative stayed and fished with these folks. The owner at the time was Dick Aho who had something to do with fisheries in Alaska. I took this digital picture from a printed picture

All the aerials and stacks and front metal box are just too much to not say match!!

It's a small world - filled with a surprising number of C-Dories! I don't know Dick Aho, but I'll bet Ive at least passed him on the street or on the water over the years. I'm sure if I asked around among friends in Petersburg, I'd find people who knew/know him.

I don't suppose you know exactly where the picture was taken near Petersburg. I've caught lots of halibut in Frederick Sound (Sukoi Islands, Thomas Bay and elsewhere). The background looks like it could be the far side of Frederick Sound - especially if a telephoto lens was used. Or might it be somewhere in the north end of the Wrangel Narrows?

Anyway, great picture for reminiscing. Thanks for posting!

I asked the question, this is what I got...

"I remember it being the far side of Fredrick Sound toward a Glacier . There were icebergs in the water."

Bingo on the location! The bergs would be from LeConte. And I just spoke with my daughter - she knows who Dick Aho is. Very Happy

Since we're reminiscing . . . Here's some young guy in Petersburg in 1979:

Sadly, it appears the mystery boat that was the subject of the OP's question, and which became the "Barracuda," has now really fallen on hard times. Couldn't discover the story of her demise while visiting Petersburg this year. Maybe somebody will rescue her.

Jeezus. It's got a pretty modern looking Yami 4 stroke! WTH? What's with the alum box on the bow? Shocked

It actually does not take them very long to become part of the forest up here. It would clean up I bet.
