OK, my Wallas finally stopped working, and a call to Scan Marine confirmed that it will cost too much $$$ to fix it.

ESPECIALLY when you consider I almost never use it. I cook out in the cockpit on the Magma grill or the little red Coleman Fold-N-Go propane stove. Aboard Two Lucky Fish, the Wallas is essentially a glorified dish-drying rack.

So once I pulled it out, I had a big hole in my galley counter top, of course. Get an alcohol stove maybe? But why? I'm still unlikely to cook there.

What I REALLY could use is, frankly, a glorified dish-drying rack! Maybe with a cutting board top that sits flush with the counter-top. Hmmm...

Well it took some searching, but I found the Bull Outdoor Products "Pull-Out Chopping Block", made for barbecue grills.

This unit is stainless steel, and is EXACTLY the same length in one dimension as the opening in my counter. It requires a slightly smaller opening in the other dimension, but by installing some strips of 1/2" plywood along the inside it fits without any visible gap leftover.

Like so:

...on both front and back:

So now my counter top looks like this:

...and with the cutting board in place:

Not bad for <$120, and WAY MORE USEFUL than my Wallas stove.

Anybody want to buy my "runs-but-won't-burn" Wallas stove, CHEAP?

Looks great! What are you using for cabin heat, as an alternative to Wallas? Or do you find you don't need cabin heat for the type of boating you do?

When ordering the new boat, the Wallas 2-burner stove/heater was a $4500 option from the C-dory factory. That seems a bit steep for a tiny 2-burner stove. Granted, I realize all things boating related cost 10x more than normal, but I said no-thanks, thinking about all the other goodies I could get for that amount of $. For me the main benefit would have been as a cabin heater, so I'm still trying to figure out an alternative, maybe a non-cooktop heater instead.

Yeah, search around here for discussions about the Webasto, Espar, or Planar diesel heaters. I'm considering one, but don't have the extra money right now.

Meanwhile, we just hardly ever need one for the boating we do. If we're out in cooler months, we tend to stay at marinas with power, so we plug in a tiny electric heater.

If you have a generator you can use it for electric heat when shore power is not available. A Honda 2000 generator and an electric heater will cost about a 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of a Wallis diesel stove (the Wallis heater only units appear to be a bit less expensive). A Wallis 1300 kerosene heater is lists about $1500 to start. I don't know if the heater only units are any more reliable than the stove tops or not.

We have also used a Little Buddy propane heater in colder weather.

The problem with heating or cooling a C-Dory is that they are not well insulated. When it's cold they can loose a lot of heat. When it's hot they can gain a lot. IMO you'll need more BTU than you expect based on the size of the cabin.

Not yet. I might run it out the Wallas exhaust port.

Tim welcome to the he man wallas haters club. Glad to see you finial gave up on the over priced POS Swedish torture device !!!! We installed a espar and a Origo tow burner alcohol shove and never looked back. still the best up grade to the boat. After we installed it and used it the first time the noise went away completely, well until she started to complain about no water gauge that is.......

Tom, I was going to ask that too, but......

Maybe he doesn't do over night or multi day trips without marina stops.

It just seams to me that the AirHead is by for the best way to go on the water.

Funny, I knew a blonde with an ethereal cranium who got blisters
on her lips from trying to blow out lightbulbs.

Are you sure you want to go on with this?

Aye.
