yamaha kicker

Am considering getting a 2006 yamaha 8hp "high thrust" kicker with 20inch shaft. Does anyone have experience with this engine?
Is it likely to interfere with main engine(Honda 90 4stroke)when cutting hard turns on the main engine ?
any knowledge of what to expect to pay?

I have no advice on hanging a small Yamaha next to a big Honda, since I've got 2 Johnsons, but I'm sure your question will generate a bit of discussion on here.

Don't remember what the HT cost, but last year we bought a 2005 F8 and it was 1900 bucks including freight. We LOVE it. Starts easily on the first pull, is quiet and great on gas.

My main engine is a yamaha F80 which is a detuned F100. Should be real close to the same size as a Honda 90. I got a good deal on a left over yamaha F15 which is a tuned up F8. Same size engine. I believe the high thrust 8h.p. uses a slightly lower gear ratio for a slower turning prop and it comes with a flat pitch prop stock. I got a 4 blade solas 7x10 prop for $60. Now I can have both high thrust and speed if desired. I wanted rope start for complete power failure (cheaper too) and for $30 dropped in a rectifier with leads to charge either battery as needed.

The kicker is mounted on the transom for now on the starboard side. The main does not interfear with the kicker when the kicker is in the raised position tilting fore and aft. When I cruise with the kicker I usually sit on the lazarett and steer with my left foot. When you turn full hard to starboard (motor to port) you must lift the steering arm a bit as it will barely hit the engine. If you crank hard to port it will barely hit the inside splashwell corner if you don't raise it a bit. But either way is not a big hinder to steering at all as I rarelly need to make a hard full turn. You may have read without a bracket on the kicker the prop will drag in the water when cruising slow on the main engine. True.... But not a super big deal. Not only will a kicker bracket get your kicker prop out of the water but it will allow room for trim tabs as well.

Can't comment on current prices but it pays to shop around. Locally I got quotes for around $3000 for Honda or Yamaha power. A cousin in Florida found the engine for $2000 had it shipped to my door in Alabama for $80. Didn't have to pay sales tax because out of state.
Maybe check the web for deals. The engine is very quiet and sips the fuel. For me a big main and a kicker is the only way to go on a CD22.

A few pics are in my gallery to give you an idea of how it fits. I went to a local dealer and made some measurements of the engine clamps and hood. Then cut out a peice of cardboard and held it to the transom to be sure it would fit before having it shipped. No regrets at all.

If your going to put it on a folding-bracket.... ya might want to go extra-long-shaft (25) mostly a sailboat engine, but I like the way the thing holds-on in rough water (deeper in the water)
I went T-8, electric-start, power-tilt, tiller-handle, for RedFox cuz she's a Classic 22 C-D. Maybe on the new transom models, you really would never want that 'extra-long-shaft' due to it being much closer to the main-engine
