Over the last two months, I've watched organisms attach themselves to my depth sounder transducer, and not coincidentally, the depth sounder's performance degraded into nothingness. I finally pulled her out yesterday. Six months' worth of mussels are shown in the below photo.
Any advice for eradicating them? For preventing a recurrence?

For eradicating them:
1) Find a large heated swimming pool
2) Fill with about 3000 bottles of nice white wine (I prefer Pinot Gris), reserve 3-4 bottles and chill them.
3) Add 3000 cloves of diced garlic
4) Turn on the heater
5) Lower in the boat
6) Give me a call or send me a PM- I will gladly help remove the mussells at this stage.
7) Pour the chilled wine on my arrival

Leave it to Roger to think big!!
Be a little more frugal to fill a large pot with the white stuff (we allso lilke the Pino Grigio) and raise it over the transducer and heat it there. Yum! Of course, with Rogers solution, you could always get in with the boat and swim with your mouth open and not waste much of the wine. Might be a little warm though. Our hot tub is 104degF but i don't that's enough to cook them but hot enough for me.....
For a longer term solution, if you don't want to grow your own, there is a very good antifouling spray (clear) available from either Boat US or West Marine that I plan to use use that should prevent that. Our boat is in salt water all season and it is virtually critter free, at least on the transducer, so far I've used a brush on stuff out of a little can that is black.

Very sorry that I can offer no help with the critter trouble, but I appreciate that I can learn something from your posting it.

Charlie - can you give up a little more detail on this antifouling spray? I looked at WM and B US, and all I could find in a spray can was some white paint. The clear spray sounds like it would be great for the transducer and trim tabs. I don't get any mussels, but the slimey weeds grow about a foot a week. _________________ TyBoo Mike

man, that's quite the aquaculture operation you have going there. Find a market for those rascals and the boat will pay for itself _________________ Ken
