|
|
My kicker is a new DF9.9B. It starts and runs fine, but when I try to flush it in the raised position (using ears, of course), it starts, runs for several seconds, then dies as though it is starving for fuel. It will start back up, but dies more quickly each subsequent attempt until after 4 or 5 attempts will not start at all. So I flush it with the flushing port, which doesn't seem like it would be as good. This has happened twice. Any input/opinions would be appreciated.
Additional information:
The boat is in the water, so flushing with fresh water in the lowered position is not an option.
The main, a 2008, 115 Suzuki, runs fine while being flushed in the raised position. _________________ "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine."

If your kicker is a carburetor engine than you are problaly starving the engine for fuel trying to run it at that angle. Without knowing the exact design of the carb I would guess that fuel is not getting to the float bowl, or getting from the bowl to the jets. Your main is a fuel injected engine so not an issue _________________ Chuck

I have the same engine configuration as you and flush them in one of two ways. First, warm the engines then shut off and use the flushing ports with the engines in tilt position. Second, you can tighten (using a bungee cord) your ear muffs and place them on the 9.9, then lower the engine and flush with engine running.
When you pull the boat, flush with Salt Away type product. _________________ Jerry and Helen

Spike, both are fully injected.
My Ira, so I take it that your 9.9 will not run in the raised position. Is that correct? |

Maybe the fuel injection modual on your kicker will not let the engine run at that angle. Just tossing it out there. Also I sent you a PM, they may be related. You may not be getting sufficient lubrication at that angle so your engine automaticly shuts off. The oil sump on your main my be designed differently so that does not happen |

2.8 Questions.
Do you need to have the OB running IF you are using the flush port?
If it is vertical, does the flush port pressure drive out the salt water? If so, can you flush it in vertical position then raise it after it has the flush time and rinse off the lower section.
I don't know the specifics for hyours but on my Yami's it is "Don't run them when doing the flush with the port, and the port is the best flush."
Nice to see you getting the album going.

I don't know it they planned it that way or not, but I don't think there's anything wrong. Just lower the engine and it will run fine. _________________ MartyP

Many engines have a low oil sensor that will kill the spark when oil is not registering on the sensor. Also, running in that position may starve oil by not allowing the oil pickup to pull oil-- that can damage the engine. I would never try to run any engine anywhere past the shallow water tilt position -- they are designed to handle that. |

Our 2013 Suzuki 9.9 is not injected and I don't run it raised because the manual states not to run it in a full tilt position (oil pressure concerns). |

I read my manual cover to cover and do not recall seeing that. I have been reading and learning a LOT since getting this boat; I may have missed it! I will check it again when I go to the boat tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone for all the input. This is a great forum! |

It was there! Thanks for inspiring me to read it again. It was under "Flushing, Engine Not Running"! Technical writing isn't what it once was! Fortunately, the motor is smarter than I am, so it seems to have shut itself down before any damage was done. I ran it for over half an hour yesterday, trying to get some of the break in done. I have no tach for the kicker, but at about half throttle, hopefully around 3000 RPM, it was pushing us along at well over 3 knots. |
