I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a v8 and Quadramatic full time 4wd. Besides the normal automatic shifter (on the column) there is a floor mounted Hi-Neutral-Lo shifter. Have tried various sources to get a straight answer as to whether it's safe to pull this ad a TOAD with all 4 wheels on the ground.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Charlie _________________ CHARLIE and PENNY CBRAT #100

Hi Charlie. Look in the owners manual under "recreational towing" - my experience has been that most of the Jeeps with a neutral/transfer case can be towed, but there have been different requirements - we had a Grand Cherokee that had to have a hot wire from the motorhome so the odometer wouldn't rack up miles and there was a specific pattern of shifting to get it ready to tow 4 wheels down.
Our local Jeep dealer was very helpful in getting it set up (at the time).

On the internet somewhere is a site that lists all possible toads and whether they can be towed 4 down. Can't remember the name of it. |

Blue ox or remco I was told is informative for 4 down info. We want to get an automatic car or small truck to tow 4 down behind truck camper one of these seasons. |

Trans in park, 4wd shifter in neutral, steering unlocked.
The drill: Leave engine on after hooking up. Trans to neutral, 4wd to neutral, trans to drive a run up a little to make sure tach shows some rpms and car is not in gear. Trans back to neutral, then when slowed...to park. Key to off. Depending on model, key now to a position that will leave the steering unlocked, but the ignition off. Most Jeeps are one click clockwise.
By now you will realize you don't have the boat with you!
