Probablly an hour and a half ,to scrape off old name using w-d 40 - alcohol and hair dryer. Trying to get all remaining glue and shading. This was only one side. After an hour of rubbing old letters off ,I think the sun fading is lightly still there, dont know how to clean it any better. Put new name on looks good.

At the auto supply store, ask for windshield adhesive remover. You only need a little bit. A mixture of solvents which cuts adhesive much faster than W-40. Potent, very smelly. Use outdoors only, and wear nitrile gloves. Will save ou a lot of scraping. Put some on the old letters, allow to soak a while, then scrape using a plastic bladed scraper. Repeat. Wash down with hot soapy water, rinse with clear tap water, and it should be good to go.

I put that process into pix in my album. Link is here:

http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album598&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

(Sorry, I don't know how to make it a short url) And If you checked out that album maybe it would have made it easier for you. Now that you have it done, good for you, enjoy and down the road, IF you have to do it again, try the hair dryer. Very Happy

Larry, glad to know it helped. I hope you used the hair dryer first and the adhesive remover next. You may want to use some ETOH on the spots where you used the adhesive remover to get rid of any residue. The new one will stick better.

Yeah it worked good with heater first, then sprayed it with cleaner ,and carefully used utility knife just the blade to gently scrape glue down. Spray worked like lube and no gel coat damage. Now that I got the system down , got to change all the numbers when state sends me my registration number, they can take up to forty days. Problem is boat will be in a slip , so I would have to haul trailer 2.5 hrs back or try and beach it ,or maybe reach it from dock. Its good to get tips that work so well. Thanks

Don't know if I would do it but I saw a guy at the marina doing it from kneeling in his inflatable dingy.

Guess it could work.

Maybee I will hang over the bow, then realize oh no my numbers are upside down when I stand on the dock ha ha. The lake is very deep 300 ft,but there are a few sandy spots where people raft up and swim 27 miles at other end of lake. We wanted to checkout that end ,now have a reason. Plus that's where the Erie canal starts. Want to tour canal over to Seneca lake also.
