Susan and I are heading north to the San Juans with SEA3PO and our dog would like to go. I am all in favor, but Susan is afraid we will have problems
if we decide to go to Victoria... I know we need to show our passports...but how about Roxie ?

Nice to hear from you, Joel and Susan! I can't help you with your question other than to say that as far as I am concerned there is a problem taking a dog - or in our case, two dogs - anywhere. But, the durn mutts gotta go, so I put up with it.

Have fun up there! And if necessary, leave the dog on Fishtales.

All you need is a vet's shot record showing everything is up to date. If, that is, they even bother to ask at the border. Sammy's been across a couple of times without incident. His predecessor, Brutus the mighty Bichon also passed through several times without comment.

Ha ! Roger and PJ are at the factory already....getting a stove installed..we plan on meeting up with them on Friday, so we will be together if we go into Canada... although it would be fun to turn him in for trying to smuggle a wild beast into Canada...
Maybe we could find a boarding place in Friday Harbor for the day we go to
Victoria... I doubt the dog really wants to see the place that much anyway.

Joel - when we have taken Oscar to Canada, we have always checked in by telephone. It goes something like this:

Canada: Do you have any animals on board?
Us: Yup.
Canada: Do you have a current rabies certificate?
Us: Yup.
Canada: Good.

Like they say in Fargo, end of story.

Whenever I have gone across the border with pets it's always been a current health certificate they asked for. This is usually only good for (I think) 30 days. Best best would be to call the Canadian Consul or Embassy near you.

The border folks care about rabies, but you should also make sure your pup is current on bordatella (the vaccination against prevent kennel cough) and have a record of it in case you need to board him somewhere for a day or two. Most vets / kennels won't take a dog without it.

In my experience the paperwork has been more for getting back "in" rather than getting "out".......

I don't think they care as long as they're vacuum packed.

That applies to cats, not dogs.

No sir, it's dogs too. B~C pointed out a long time ago that them dogs have a special port on them that is used for the hose from the vacuum packer.

For travel with a dog or cat into Canada from the United States, a current Rabies Certificate (not a medical record or shot record) is all that is required. A valid health certificate, written to the state of destination is required to get back into the United States and will work in both directions. You may never be asked for one, but that is the law. The health certificate requires a physical exam within ten days of departure and is good for thirty days of travel. Steve Torrence D.V.M.

Uh oh.

Just so you know, Doc, that picture above is a morphed photo I found on the web. I did not really vacuum pack the cute little Westie we used to have. Really, I didn't. B~C might do it, but never me.

That is good to know about the health certificate to get home. One of these days we will be making that cruise, and I doubt there's any way of me getting out of taking both our mutts. And I'm just the guy they would check, too.

Thanks.

Mike. You are a practical man. I am sure that you are aware that vacuum packing would greatly reduce buoyancy and any space gained would be lost by additional dfds.
