Does anyone have a Navionics Gold "2XG" chip they would consider renting (for the summer) or selling?
http://www.navionics.com/Charts_GoldPlus.asp?ChartSizeID=8&GoldCode=2XG&ContinentID=5
I have the "1XG" chip but it does not contain nav data for the Canadian waters from the San Juans north to Dixon Entrance ... they want you go buy the (rather expensive) 2XG chip.
Before I buy the chip,I thought I'd ask the Brat's. On the downside - if I buy the 2XG it covers ALL of Canada ... Hmmm, Hudson Bay, and maybe Nunavut in 2012???

Hi Casey, I don't have a chip as I run Garmin, however does this mean you're planning on cruising Canadian waters this summer?
Cross wakes if you do!

Yea George, that's the size of it.
Originally I planned to do another "Southeast AK" trip out of Prince Rupert this summer, but for a variety of reason's I changed course and (now) plan to explore the San Juan's, and Gulf Islands up to the Broughton's.
Back in 2006 I followed Halcyon and Wanderer (and an armada of 16 GrandBanks yachts...) north from Anacortes through the islands. I had planned to turnaround at Sullivan Bay and spend the remaining summer exploring my way back to Anacortes. While at Echo Bay I (again) changed my mind and continued North, met Sandy in Ketchikan and we cruised on from there before our return to Anacortes.
The net result is that I still have a lot of exploring in your area on my "Bucket List."
I plan to be at the Friday Harbor CBGT then proceed north from there; no real agenda, but I want to be back to AZ for the Powell CBGT(!).
Looking forward to a good, free-ranging summer! I suspect there are going to be a number of C-Brat's on the local waters. Maybe we can form a flotilla and attack Squirrel Cove or something, eh?
Best,

Dr.Bob,
Yep, the 2XG chip covers a LOT of Canadian outback.
If I can borrow/rent the chip from someone, I won't feel duty-bound to do something really silly ... like be the first C-Dory (clone) to try the Northwest Passage.
Hmmm ... does that mean if I buy the chip I need be laying out fuel caches along the NW Passage route? ...Oh God.
Still, it's fun to think about, and it sounds like I'll have some opportunity to debrief George on his trip!
Best,
Casey
PS: Although Sandy generally cuts me a lot of slack, this message has not been approved by the 'front office, so please take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Look forward to seeing you Casey, it looks like a lot of us are in the Broughtons. In my dreams (dark ones) late at night ... I see me and my c dory cruising the Northwest Passage. Thankfully we don't have enough range. Broughtons it is and then Lake Powell. Whew. George |

FWIW, for iPad the Navionics "USA and Canada" is $14.99 and the 2XG cartography for iPad iNavX is only $29.99:

So far I'm loving my refurb iPad gen 1 ($349 from Apple) with Bad-Elf GPS ($99), Navionics cartography ($29), and 1" RAM mount & holder (about $50)! _________________ 36' Little Harbor Whisperjet - Lulu

Thanks ... I had forgotten to check iTunes....
I checked and downloaded the USA&CN Navionics data and it seems to work very well. Using my iPhone may be a bit iffy (not to mention eye-strain), but it'll work great for a backup!

Hey, Hey, Hey for sure, but anything that turns George’s dreams dark most definitely gives me reason to consider and reconsider with a big NO WAY, the final thought. That chip does cover an area I’ve spent some time thinking about cruising and that’s the McKenzie River Delta from Tsiigehtchic to Tuktoyaktuk including the village area of Aklavik and maybe a short excursion up or down the coast of the Beaufort Sea which is of course part of the Northwest Passage.
Quite a road trip to start and end including at least 900 miles of gravel road on the Dempster Highway. Jo-Lee and I made the trip to Tsiigehtchic (Arctic Red River) in 2002 and did some exploring with a small RIB and its on the list of areas we would sure like to see again and add to where we went before.
Downside is present happenings in the World is likely to make such a trip financially unfeasible with fuel cost on the water and land the biggest barrier.

I just bought the 2XG chip for my LEG III of my trip. I'd be glad to let you use it.

Hi Casey,
I talked to you in Jan. when my wife and I passed through The Villages on our way to the Keys hoping we could get together to say Hello----never got it worked out as we were on a tight schedule traveling----maybe next time.
I see you're going to be at Friday Harbor for the CBGT in May. We plan to be there also.
Did you solve your hunt for a 2XG chip? I've got one still new in the box. Haven't decided if I'm going to start using it this summer or not. Bought it mainly because I heard Navionics was going to quit making CF chips. Do you know if this is true or rumor? Anyway, Let me know if you found one yet and we'll look forward to Friday Harbor.

Charlie and Melle Lee,
I don't know, and haven't read anything about Navionics chip production.
I am off the "2XG" quest for the time being.
Events in the past ten days have totally rearranged my World, so things are in turmoil. As of now I will not be attending either the Friday Harbor or Lake Powell CBGT's.
The details will come out in due course, but for the time being we are keeping the situation under wraps.
