Those Dorky Fishing Dots

It seems every year I end up with a couple of tide books with Dot's Fishing Guide® in it. You know, "Bigger the dot - better the fishing". Does anybody take them dots seriously? I don't put any stock at all in them, but I can't help but notice the fishing luck seems to correspond to the size of the dot. Why can't they just give everyday a big dot? Or at least every weekend?

A friend gave me a "fishing calendar" this year...never has fished as indicated, but I appreciate her thinking of my love for fishing. We got ourselves a 'fishing barometer' as a Christmas present last year...it's never been in the "excellent fishing" range....ever....but we continue to fish when we get the chance to go and we hear of a bite....maybe I should go for the dots!

It's my understanding that the dots correspond with the sun/moon cycles and these cycles can and do affect fish activity. However, that doesn't mean I'll ever decide to bag a fishing trip based on a small dot size....

I take the dot system with a grain of salt but, I also think it makes a lot of sense. You'll notice that the bigger dot days relate with smaller tide changes. The larger difference in heights from a low tide to a high tide result in more current. How this effects fishing depends I guess on what your fishing for but for bottom fishing it very important. The stronger the current the more difficult it is for you lines to remain on the bottom where the fish are. A good fisherman that is tentatively letting line out or putting additional weight to remain on the bottom probly wont see that much of a difference in fishing on one particular day or another. However the smaller current days makes fishing easier for everyone and definitely IMO helps those not so seasoned fisher people in catching fish.

One more thing to add. I dont fish the dots up here in Alaska as much as the times. The dots correspond to current basically and slack water or the hour before and hour after the tide is when fishing, in theory, is best.
