We were out fishing on Saturday just off the West Vancouver shoreline when this cruised by. At first glance, we thought it was some type of military stealth thing, but after it went by we thought that it may have been a private yacht. When we got home, I just had to find out what it was. After some Google searching, I think it was the 118' WallyPower. Wikipedia shows some mind-bending stats:
Max Speed: 60 knots! (70mph, 110kmh)
Engines: (3) Vericor TF50 gas turbines generating 5,600 horsepower!
Total power output: is 16,800 horsepower (12,500 kW)
Range:1,500 nautical miles (2,800 km) at 9 knots (17 km/h), or 300 nautical miles (560 km) at 60 knots (110 km/h).
Fuel capacity:22,000 liters (5800 US gallons)
At the maximum speed of 60 knots (110 km/h) the gas turbine uses 15 US gallons / 58 liters of fuel per nautical mile, 900 gallons / 3500 liters per hour.
Price: 33 million
I tuned the VHF to Vancouver traffic and heard comments about how much radio traffic it had generated with people asking questions...what do you think?

Yup...saw it up close and personal at the fuel dock at the PA Boat Haven Marina.
Best part about watching it - It was taking forever to fuel, and a couple of fishermen came in needing gas as well. The harbormaster told them to squeeze around the bow of this behemoth to get to the dock on the other side - via a tiny space between the bow and the next dock over. In doing so, they nearly plowed into it several times...high winds and limited skills. Watching the look on the helpless crews' faces was priceless...
Quite frankly, even though the "wow" factor was definitely there...that didn't offset the fact it's fugly as sin.
And...those three turbine engines at 5000+ HP each are only for "go fast" duty - not cruising. It has a pair of Cummins (370HP each) as "auxilliary" power that push it along at 9 knots.

Now I know what really happened to Dr. No! Another case of too much money, too little sense or taste. Couldn't they at least have put some flames along the sides to give it a little class. _________________ Patti and Barry

Just think about how many CDories could be built with that kind of money! Maybe a few Ranger Tugs, too! _________________ "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln |

I hope Dana didn't see it. You know how she's been lately around boats. _________________ TyBoo Mike

On the other hand, it would look nice on a (very) large trailer behind a gray Corvette _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

Don't talk about Corvettes on the boat forum. You would hit me upalongside the head if you knew the thoughts that went through it when sitting in that car.

50 grand to do 300 miles?? If you have to ask what the mileage is, then clearly, you can't afford the vehicle.
Pretty ugly for the money.
Around the world comfort cruising more economically can be had for millions less. But different strokes for different folks. The family that owns it are definitely different. _________________ You can tell a man his wife is ugly, but never ever criticize his dog, his gun, his truck or his boat.

In my pre-LE days, I worked for Tom Gentry. He was a very wealthy Hawai'i real estate developer with a love of boats and speed. He build Gentry Eagle and broke the trans-Atlantic crossing record, among other speed records. He then had it modified into his personal yacht. He was a nice guy too; very personable. This thing kinda reminded me of him and his speed yacht. Although, Gentry's is MUCH sexier.
