There is a link through Active Captain to Defender, for Manson Supreme anchors. I am looking to replace the anchor on our TomCat, in anticipation of an Alaska cruise next summer. The Mansion Supreme on the Defender link shows a 25# anchor for $259.99.
The question is, is the 25# anchor right for the TomCat and is $259.99 ($301.00 with shipping) an OK price. I have had poor luck with the Delta that came on the boat from the factory, and need to upgrade. I don't live within 200 miles of any marine stores, so internet sales work best for me. _________________

Brent,
I think that to be a excellent choice in anchor for you in Alaska & their design makes them easy to take off the bow & set on land at Powell. The price has come down since I bought a 15 pound Manson Supreme from Defender on sale, a couple years ago at near the same price as you quoted for the 25#. Last year I replaced the 15# Manson Supreme, which I now have as a spare, with a 25 # Manson Boss at a much higher price than the 25# Supreme. If I could do it over I would go now with a 25# Manson Supreme instead.
We sure hope to see you two up in Alaska next year even if not at Pelican. Would be fun discussing Alaska at Powell this year if your going to be there again.

I bought a 25 pound Manson Supreme in April for $259.99 from Defender. Shipping to Pa. was 22 dollars. I went with 50' of chain also. The idea was to be able to just put out chain as we anchor usually in 10 foot of less and save wear and tear on our rode going through our windless. Only anchored about three times so for and it seems to hold just fine but we didn't much wind but had a decent amount of current where we were fishing in New Jersey. Out 14 pound Lewmar knock off was ok but did not always hold in our Florida Keys fishing situations.

Thanks, Jay for the info. I see that the Manson Supreme isn't actually part of the anchor sale. The $259.99 is their everyday price. it's the larger anchors that are on the AC sale.
Yes we are planning on Powell in September and want to talk about Alaska for summer 2015. |

Hopefully Manson's galvanizing issues have been resolved.
At least one other Brat beside myself have dealt with that problem.
To be clear, most of their anchors are OK.
Defender's preferred way of dealing with it is sending a can of cold galvanizing spray. Alternatively you can send photos to Defender and the distributor after back and forth emails, putting up with them insinuating you don't know how to care for an anchor, then eat the considerable shipping to send it back for replacement. |

I used a Manson Supreme 25# for our Alaska trip on the C Dory25. It would be a very good anchor for the Tom Cat 255. I have used the Manson Boss (good galvanizing) 10# on the C Dory 22 a couple of times with short scope and works very well. Sets very quickly. We will be taking it to Powell. We did not have the time or health to do formal testing agains the Fortress or Delta, (maybe do this at Powell). _________________ Bob Austin

Jay,
We enjoyed meeting you and Jolee at Stuart Island on Memorial Day weekend. I've been thinking about getting a Manson Boss and am curious about why you wished you'd gotten a Supreme instead.

Hi Lyle,
The 25 pound Manson Boss has set instantly, so far every time we deployed it & I still believe it's probably an even better holding anchor than the 25 pound Supreme, but with its huge over sized flukes perhaps a bit to much overkill for a 22CD & those flukes haul up a very large amount of mud that's hard to clean off most every time I've retrieved it. That & the $100 + cost over the Supreme account for my reservations. I still think nothing available now will compare with it in very soft mud & even perhaps in most other bottom types & the 25 pound Boss a excellent overall choice of anchor for a 25 CD or Tomcat if wanting to sleep well at anchor on a cruise. If I owned a tomcat or 25 CD it would still be a tough choice between the 25 pound Supreme or Boss. By the end of the summer next year with another Southeast Alaska extended cruise behind us, I'll be more confident in my advise about the Manson Boss Anchor.

The reason I switched from a Rocna to a Manson Boss was because of it's lower profile on the bow roller.
I was fed up with looking at-around-through the anchor's roll bar while underway. |

Chester, that's a very good point about the Supreme blocking the view on a 22CD where as the Boss though much larger sits lower & out of the way of seeing ahead much like the claw style. |

Oh come on - you don't appreciate all the little "vignettes" framed by that lovely (galvanized) arch?

I guess you could always stand up and stick your head out the sunroof... Oh, wait, this is a 22. I've had too many TomCats!!

I bought my 15lb Manson Supreme locally at the Chandler's 2 years ago for $230. Maybe I could have got it a tad cheaper online, but I did like seeing it and handling it in person before shelling out the bucks. Best anchor I have ever used. Sets first time every time, don't even have to back up on it.
As for restricting the view? You guys are joking right? I don't even notice it is there when driving along. The bow rail takes up more eye distraction if we are talking about impaired vision.

Martin, no joke here, though I do appreciate Sunbeam's & Charlie's input. I'd prefer not having windows to dirty, bow railings, anchor or anything else restrict my vision, which of course is over ridden by their value being higher than the restricted vision, but if one can make a choice between an anchor that does even a small amount restrict vision or one that doesn't, I don't see a negative to its being a consideration in the selection process.
