I was just reading some information on a new lower priced satellite phone that sells for $499. The GSP-1700 is the model and they have a number of different plans available. One plan The Orbit 100 allows for 100 minutes of talk per month for 65.00 dollars and a 50 activation fee.
What's on the horizon is a satellite hotspot that along with a convenient app will allow your smart phone to work as a satellite phone through use of the satellite hotspot called Sat-Fi. No word on how the hotspot will be priced yet. Global Star is waiting for FCC certification which is expected to come in the coming months. The product will be come available shortly there after. For info WWW.globalstar.com I hold no interest in the company but thought the concept of being able to use an existing Smart Phone on a satellite network to be interesting if you were in danger and out of normal cell range.

I don't follow Panbo. There was a local article about sat phones and the coming satellite based wifi hot spot that caught my interest. It was in the June issue of The Fisherman a New York and New Jersey based fishing enthusiast subscription based magazine.
