I looked at their history and people typically buy their boats for just a few hundred bucks. This C-Dory is a pretty big earner for them.

I've been running across Boat Angel ads for years on eBay (they list quite a few sailboats) and this is typical for them. They are strictly a donation place (not mariners), and their offerings are usually in pretty bad shape. Quite a few times I've even seen the boat completely mis-identified as to brand and model, or they'll say things that don't make sense to a boater such as the boat is meant for salt water, etc.

So, for better or worse, this is just their usual type of ad. What I mean is, from what I can see, it's not unusual or "suspicious" in the context of what they typically do.

i have a LOT of experience with questionable hotrods (rat rods), and old motorcycles that are promoted as "ran" (rather than runs). so as a buyer I always assume the worst and know fully what I'm getting into, but it seems as though they may have had experiences with buyers who expected their $300 sailboat to be outfitted like a $30k sailboat... kind of unfortunate but I get it.

I think that's probably a big part of it. And years ago, they used to wax a bit more ... shall we say "optimistically" about the boats on offer, and there were few or no photos, so perhaps that also helped lead to folks getting their hopes up.

Now there are photos galore and they basically tell you not to expect much. I'm sure there are still folks who don't "get" how much it takes to bring a boat up to snuff who get surprised though (heck, even for people who DO know it can be easy to get sucked in!)

My experience with Boat Angel was very good. They did not promise much, but what I was buying was very clear to me. I purchased an 18' A-Cat catamaran made of kevlar and carbon and imported from Europe... I paid $800 for a boat worth $3500. After sailing the boat for a few years, I sold it for $4500.
But of course not all old boats have much in the way of value, especially those that are in really poor condition. Finally though Boat Angels did me well, donated boats are rarely well described and you don't get to view the boat, till you have paid for it.

Perhaps if the stolen copper wiring were replaced the motor would work. The motor on the boat in the Susan Schmidt link looks like a Mercury.

I was just looking at her book on Google books (where you can read a sampling of pages). On page 11 she talks about buying the boat (which is a 1993) and notes that she took off the "nine year old" two stroke engine and got a new Suzuki 70hp, four-stroke with fuel injection. Sounds like perhaps that's the engine that's still on it now would make it a 2002 or so engine.

Presuming it's not her that donated it, I kind of hope she's not looking at the photos - sad to see it so neglected.

It called to see if I could view it since I am in NC ,and no was the answer.
The price was only 4500 at the time,so it's already too high for my opinion at almost 10 thousand ,but I must say I'm happy people are ready to take it at that price Thumbs Up

It looks like a P.O.S.

and its at $5300 now , how does that work ,

methinks ebay is a scam , remember the elusive 25.

Sellers bidding stuff up under different user names? , not cool.

EASY! If I could afford it I'd be on it like white on rice! This boat will clean up nice with the addition of an opening center front window. The motor is a gamble but I bet it would run with some lovin from a Suzuki guy.

Not a night mare in my opinion just possibilities.
