Garmin is going to the next series of chart plotters and the 740s is on sale for $799 at West Marine--less on some internet sites. The new series is personified by the 741xs ($1699) which has chirp technology (transducer is an extra $299) and faster processing, with a few other features.

Thanks Dr Bob. A good tip. And to think, I just got the GPSMap 640 recently. I really nice machine for a stand alone backup, and it also has streets and roads too Thumbs Up

Garmin has always been one of my favorite traveling companions.

Ah, technology. What is new today will be obsolete next week...our 740S works fine for us though and I don't posses the wallet to keep up w/ the flavor of the week.

I am also happy with my 740S. I will probably keep it until the next boat.

I have really enjoyed mine. I bought the one with the radar pack and it is a great setup for the money.

I'm taking that the sonar works well on this unit also? (Some issues with it on the GPSMAP 541S.)

The sonar is better than the 541s. The sounder is up to 1000 watts; there are 3 transducers for transom mount. One is the $70 which is made by Garmin. The best for the bucks is about $120 the p66 Airmar, for 6 pin Garmin, and then a 1000 Watt unit by Airmar which is expensive.
