I want to know the standard fuel consumption of a tomcat boat if it has 4000 rpm? How much average should they give? I have heard my friend's boat goes 70km on around 40 litres of fuel. Isn't that fuel consumption too bad?

As long as we are on the subject. What kind of fuel consumption are people averaging on a 16 Cruiser with a 40 HP Honda?

It all depends on conditions. I have used as little as a gallon an hour cruising at 1800 rpm at 10 kts. At my full crusing 4600 rpm an 24 kts. I use about 2 gallons an hour. If it' flat calm I get better fuel consumption than in choppy water.

Check out the link and see what honda says you should get at different rpms.

sounds pretty good to me, converts to around 4mpg+? That sounds high for a tomcat but someone else may chime in.

Using natutical miles and us gallons I get 3.6 mpg. With st. miles it is 4.0 as noted by DuckDogIitus.

Maybe if he was going at a displacement speed--but 4000 would have been in the mid 20 knots in Thataway, and we averaged 2.1 to 2.2 miles per gallon on several 200 mile runs 95% at 25 knots.
This is with twin 150 Suzukis in mixed weather.

So I don't believe your friend if he had a Tom Cat 255. It may be different with the Tom Cat 24 and 90 or 115 engines.

Well,
70km = 43.4statute miles = 37.8nm
40liters = 10.6 U.S. gal.
So he is getting about 3.6nm/gal which seems better than I would expect at cruise. However, if a good fraction of his time is spent in the 6kt or less range, than those numbers are possible.

compared to most boats of this size 2.5mpg or greater is pretty good.

We are trying to determine our fuel consumption but have no fuel flow meter to know where the economy is best. Went to the San Juans and stayed the week there this past week and we did burn quite a bit of fuel. Didn't help that the gas was $5.37/gallon at the fuel dock.

I would like to know from other Tomcat owners at what speed do you get maximum fuel economy? Next time we head on a far journey, I would like to cruise at whatever speed will get us there consuming the least amount of fuel.

Our engines are Yamaha F100's

Thanks,

Prior to the Tom Cat we had a similar size and weight monohull with a 300 hp in/out/duoprop, injected engine. We got 1.6 miles per gallon. The Tom Cat was slighly more than 0.5 miles per gallon better.
