Are the cowlings on outboards, especially Yamahas fiberglass or plastic? Pulled a bone head today, not to bad but I know its there.

Hope that little boo boo goes out easy,

Most of the larger motors are fiberglass, but smaller ones are plastic. Some of the ones where the larger top cowling is fiberglass, have smaller areas such as panels below the main cowl, which are plastic.

I'm sure they could be painted, like a car etc; fiberglass can be painted the same way. Plastic would be more challenging, but possible. Usually, a flex agent is used. Our Suzuki is somewhat faded from the sun, even though I cover it when not in use. More cosmetic than anything though.

Those cowls are NOT inexspensive. Hope it's not too bad, Chuck. We've all had brain farts. I just took the mirror off of M's SUV while backing the boat/trailer into the drivway. Luckily it's only $50 and my time to repair.

There are a lot of new spray paints on the market now that are designed just for plastic. You can now repaint your cheap lawn chairs with ease. My dad just repainted the cowling on his 30 year old search light on his boat. The plastic case ans cover was old and sun dried and starting to crack. We sanded it lightly and washed it with a degreaser then spray painted is with one of the new paints from kryon that home depot sells. Looks like new plastic not repainted plastic. It bonds to the old plastic. I was doubtful about it when we started but it came out great.

Marc It is an 010 Yamaha 115, but with shipping cost am not sure it would be worth it for me. This is more than just a small scratch, but I don't think the fiberglass has been broken through. I dropped the camper back bow frame and it looks like a flex crack on the top right of the cowl.
