Within the last 3-4 mo months I discussed my problems concerning the dirty carbs on my engine. I received a lot of help during this time from the forum members, including detailed personal messages from a few members. The good advice that the engine is a good design and, having only 450 hr when I purchased the 1999 22' CD in Jan of this year, should be repairable at reasonable cost; and that replacing with a new engine would be a foolish mistake. I purchased an ultrasonic cleaner and cleaned the dissambled carbs. I then ran B-13 additive in several tankfulls of gas. After being balanced by my local Yamaha service shop, the engine ran like new. Both lower unit seals were leaking badly (lost most of new lube and had milky lube remaining in just a few hr after servicing the lower unit). I had the service dept replace both seals. The water pump was pumping water, but the housing was burned badly (melted), and the impella was in bad shape. This was found as the seals were being replaced. So the seals, water pump, and carb balance was all done at the same time. Total cost for all this, including the ultrasonic cleaner, was about $500. After an overnight cruise, it was time for a real trip.
I did an engine oil change, installed a 3rd fuel tank (12gal) which gave me 48gal total tankage. Original tanks had been leveled by raising the inside of each tank 2". This left just enough room for the 12gal tank between them. We loaded enough food supplies for over a month, which means we were heavily loaded. We kept the water tank topped off every time we could. We anchored out every night underway. We began in Daytona Beach 01 June and arrived back in Daytona 28 June. Route was ICW (MM 831) to Norfolk (MM 000), Chesapeake Bay to Potomac River to fall line of the river just past Washington DC, visited relatives up Aquaquan River for 3 days, and return to Daytona via the same route. Another post will describe the weather chalanges we faced.
We traveled 2311 smi, used 479.5 gal gas= 4.82 smpg (4.19 nmph). Since ICW is all plotted in Statute miles, we set gps units for statute miles. As stated earlier, we were heavily loaded. We ran with PermaTrim full down, and cruised 3600 rpm for most of trip north bound, then 4000 rpm second half of trip. Speeds were 13-16 smph. We noticed little, if any mpg difference at the 2 rpms. The engine ran 100%, never missed a beat. _________________ When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
It's not the destination that is important, it's the trip.

I failed to mention that I changed the oil in Acquaquan, VA at just over 100 hr. The round trip was 210.5 hr, so I am ready for another oil change. Average speed was 11 smph using total hr and distance figures.
I should have posted 4.19 nmpg, not nmph in my post. |

Nice to hear about your trip and the follow-up on your F80 - sounds like you were nicely rewarded for a bit of perseverance on the engine

Wow, 2311 miles. Now that is a quite a sea trial. Glad to hear the Yamaha is performing as it has been cared for. Sounds like a great cruise. _________________ Chris |

Great news and a great trip for a "shake down"--no go do Alaska before the summer is over! _________________ Bob Austin
