Given my recent engine problems on my first outing I'm in the market for a Honda BF90D shop manual. I'd planned on getting one eventually but now it seems sooner is better than later. I've seen the official Honda manual advertised at helminc.com for a bit over $90.

http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2.asp?Make=MAR&Model=B90D&Year=&Category=1&class%5F2=MAR&mk=Honda+Marine&yr=All+Years&md=BF90D&dt=Shop%2FService+Information&module=&from=result&Style=helm&Sku=61ZY900E2KIT&itemtype=K

With shipping I'm sure it will run over $100. My question is, does anyone know of an online source that offers a better price?

I bought mine on eBay a bit cheaper. They are $83.95 with free shipping.

Mike, When you order the manual make certain it is the "BF-90D" and not the "BF-90A" version. The "D" manual contains a section for both the "fuel injection system" and also has the newer model "wiring diagrams". The eBay listing Rob posted was for the "BF-90A" manual which is not what you want unless of course your vessel was rigged with an older Honda outboard. Honda began using the "electronic fuel injection" system in the year 2007 on most of the mid range outboards. I'm curious as to what sort of problems you are experiencing and what model Honda your vessel was rigged with?

Yes, I noted that. I do need the "D" series manual. I'm still having no luck finding a Clymer or other manual for the newer Hondas. It looks like I'll have to pay the Honda price.

It's a new Honda 90 that had one tenth of an hour on the meter when I launched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was stuck in forward gear. The shift lever was in neutral so it started up fine but I noticed that the boat was pulling against the docking lines, walked back to the stern and saw the prop was moving water. Regardless of what I did with the shift lever it stayed in forward. I pulled the boat and found this:

The best I can figure that rod has something to do with the shifting and that washer (and another under it along with the circlip that's supposed to hold them in place) came out for some reason. Any how, after the Honda dealer I took it to told me this morning it wasn't a warranty repair and that I'd have to pay for it I decided I need the shop manuals now, not down the road when it's time to do some maintenance.

Apologies for the incorrect link. Didn't even notice that it was for the older model. I do remember when I bought my BF90D manual last year, I had no luck finding it elsewhere so paid the Honda price via eBay.

No problem. I hadn't thought to check eBay prior to your post. The BF90D manual is available there too.

Does it cover the serial number range BBCJ-1000001 through 9999999? If so I'll take it!

Mike, It seems to me that unless there has been some obvious external damage to motor with the possibly of internal involvement, I would certainly phone Honda direct for advice before engaging repair work yourself. From your description of problem it may have to do with rigging and engine control adjustments at the time of motor installation.

No, no damage. It's a brand new engine. I've spent a lot of time working on the boat since I bought it last winter and washed it the day before I put it in the water giving everything a good look over to find any problems. There was no external damage. I think it was just something not connected properly when it was built. Those things happen. I'm not sure why the Honda shop I took it to won't fix it under warranty but I've already resolved that issue through the dealer I bought it from.

Regarding the Honda factory service manuals, I did find out that if one buys them direct from Honda Marine they include three years of updates free.

What was the issue?

The Honda shop is insisting that someone removed the lower unit (gearbox), reinstalled it and that it wasn't reinstalled properly. When I asked why the washers were out of place (no need to remove them to drop the lower unit) the Honda shop said it was done by someone who didn't know what they were doing. The Honda shop I bought it from said they never removed the lower unit, after all, it was a brand new engine, and I know I never did. Why someone would do that on a brand new engine that's never been in the water beats me. I'm thinking that it just wasn't put together correctly when built and bouncing around on the trailer getting it to the water caused the problem. It ran fine (in neutral) in December when I picked it up and wasn't run again until I put it in the water a few weeks ago when it was stuck in forward gear.

So far the only folks who have worked on it are the Honda factory, the Honda dealer that installed it and the Honda dealer it is at now. Either way it's been Honda work up to this point. I'll pay his fee and get reimbursed through the dealer I purchased it from.
