The time for cruising the mighty Erie Canal is soon upon us. If you can trailer your boat this is one of the nicest summer and fall cruising grounds in the East. There are over 525 miles of protected waterway and many wonderful towns to visit. Most towns have dockage for little or no cost with electric and water, many have showers for boaters.

The tolls are about $50.00 for the whole season. The western end of the canal has a 10 MPH speed so a C-Dory does not use much gas.

The only bad news is that the Newark Diner has closed and been removed from Newark. Breakfast was $1.99 for two eggs, toast, pototos and coffee. There are other places to eat in Newark so you won't go hungry. Ask at the visitors center at the public dock and they will welcome you and direct you to many fine places in town. You won't go far for the laundry, it is free at the visitors center along with showers, free docking and electricy.

Ah, Pat and Fred --
The wonderful shared memories of time together along the canal. You are so right -- one of the best cruises on the North American continent, in our opinion also. Have a great time. Cheers - E & B

First I have heard about the dinner but, as you say, there are plenty other places and no lack of friendly folks to point you in the right direction. The public dock at Newark is great for their accommodations, nice clean showers, laundry, electric, water, pump out station. Usually our first stop after leaving the marina in Lake Senecca and a great starting point for a trip further west.

In October, 2012 stopped twice at the dinner on my Erie Canal cruise- the place was for sale- spoke with the owner who had owned the dinner for years- he was looking to retire- surprised to see it is gone- the place was a landmark and would have thought it would have helped sell it-Newark, NY looked to me as a town that was doing ok.
