I see folks are putting together their plans for this coming season so let's firm up the Lake Powell cruise dates for this September. Rendezvous will be in Oak Canyon on Saturday, September 21. We will have a potluck type thing in Oak Canyon on Saturday night...then head up river to see the high points of the lake over the next few days. Looks like water levels will be down this year...not to worry...we will deal with it as always. The lake will be gorgeous and the adventure awesome nonetheless.

Jody...we had a great sandbar up in there in 2008...water level 3628. The lead picture in the 2008 Lake Powell Gathering album is of that sandbar...I would stick the pic in here if I knew how.

Tyboo...thanks for the announcement/signup.

Is it this one? (Caption read: "C-Pod at Fortymile Canyon.")

PS: To get a photo here, you go to it in the album, click on it to make it full-sized (some photos will get even larger if you click on them a second time), and then right click and get the image address (on a Mac, right click and select "copy image address"; on Windows.... I think you right click and then select Properties and then you can get to the address). Once you have the address copied, you come back to your post and paste it in. Then highlight it and then go up above the composing box and click on "Img" which will put image tags around it. Then I usually preview before submitting the post because sometimes it breaks up the image tags oddly and then you have to manually remove a space or something (i.e. it puts in a hard return in an odd place). Once it shows up properly in Preview then you can submit and all will be good.

Sunbeam...that's the one...Willow Creek is in Fortymile. Didn't have any trouble finding firewood that night!

Thanks for the lesson...I almost had it...but one little step...and no go.

Hi,

Sorry I missed last year's trip. I should be able to make it this year. I haven't been on here in quite a while and thought I'd check in to see what's up.

I see my Bossa Nova on the left side of that group picture. Furthest one up the creek. I recognize the radar/engine setup and one of my two kayak docking fenders on the port side. Looks like the ultra-tidy Rana Verde next to me.

Good times.

I think I can stretch the trip out even longer this year.

Since I expect to have more time this year I'd like to consider going up through the Bryce Canyon area and launching from Bullfrog this time. I've never done that. Coming up from San Diego it adds another couple hundred miles instead of going to Page.

Does anyone know of a real problem with Hwy 12 and 24 through that area towing a boat? I seem to remember you can't tow through a tunnel in Zion on Hwy 9, but perhaps I'm wrong about that.

On the Utah Highway Patrol site I posted a question about towing on those three roads. I'll report back any reply I get. Could be useful. Or comical.

I think I'd rather try Bullfrog, partly for the novelty and partly because I'm guessing we'll be using the long way around from Page this year going up the lake instead of the cutoff, given the water levels. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

12 is ok just a little steep. 24 is the way I come no problems there. I have towed down Zion once with the boat they didn't stop me it is steep. It was also a traffic jam.

I got a nice reply from them. Said all three roads I mentioned (12, 24 and through Zion on 9) are OK for towing, but they sent a link for me to check the tunnel permit process for Zion.

http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/the-zion-mount-carmel-tunnel.htm

To summarize, there's a $15 permit to pay for a special escorted-one-way-traffic-limited trip through the tunnel. And there's a 50 ft combined limit.

My 22' measures 28' on the trailer with engine tilted for towing. My 2000 Silverado 1500 extra cab (4 door, but not full crew cab) with 6.5' bed measures 19.5' with hitch, so my combined length is OK by 2.5 feet.

Still haven't decided which way I'm going, but at least I know the options now.

I was in Zion a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful area and well worth a visit. There were tons of RVs going through the tunnel, so be prepared to wait. Every time I went through I waited for ~20 minutes (I was in a normal sized car, but the tunnel seemed to only operate in one direction because of the RVs). If you want to camp in the NP campground arrive early. It was full every day by about 9am.

If you're driving in the evening be careful of the many deer jumping onto the road in the evenings...I killed one on highway 9 1/3 mile east of the park.

We are headed to Lake Powell in the morning ( 6/1/13 ) for a relaxing 8 days. The weather reports are for 80 to 100 degree days with 60's at night. The fishing has been excellent for all species, especially for Stripers and Walleye. We will launch at Bullfrog and go up-lake to start.
