Could I double check the dates then? Because if I'm reading correctly on the event Calendar, it's scheduled for the week of September 21-27 this year. I wouldn't mind at all if it's the next week, but would like to show up for the correct one!

You're correct...looking at the wrong week. Leave Wahweap on Friday the 20th for the gathering in Oak on the 21st.
Thanks for keeping me in line! _________________ Chris

Ah, that explains it! I was looking at travel options on Google Maps a few weeks back and I couldn't get it to route through that section of road like it normally does. I tried a bunch of stuff and finally sent Google a note saying I thought their database was broken right there.
Turns out it must be taking the slide closure into account...
Pretty smart, but maybe it should pop up a message if you're clicking around in that area.

Paving is being done on a Navajo nation road--but I doubt it will be done by late Sept--worth checking however. Apparently there is a lot of unstable land along the old route of 89. _________________ Bob Austin

Here's a news story on the state of Lake Powell:
Dwindling Colorado River Forces First-Ever Cuts in Lake Powell Water Releases
Perhaps Chris of Rana Verde, our annual Lake Powell event leader, and a water supply professional, can comment on it's accuracy.

This link is one that's referred to in Sea Wolf's linked article, but I figured I'd post it here individually too. It's the Bureau of Reclamation's release (they manage the water in many western states) and seems to contain many of the facts/info that were used in the article. It also tells how/when the projections will be updated.

Waters going to be low this year. Not as low as the all time low, but there will be many new rocks to see. _________________ Jody Kidd

Donna and I are planning to be at the gathering again this year, but launching out of Antelope Pt. Does anyone know a good mechanic in the area to do a little carb tune up before we launch? _________________ "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time..." (James Taylor) |

Not sure on the mechanic, but the Antelope point ramp is getting close to being closed. You might need to use the valet ramp at Antelope which is a pay service. You might want to ask about the mechanic over on wayneswords.com |

Antelope Points minimum safe launch is 3587 and the lake is at 3590 as of today. The lake has leveled off for the last couple of days if they slow the flow it might be open on the 20th. If it starts to drop like it has Been then maybe not. |

Just posted some photos in the C-Swell album under Lake Powell Labor Day Weekend 2013. I want to get everyone psyched for the upcoming gathering. Weather was pretty decent over that weekend with a high around 97 on Friday and 93 the other days. Low around 72 at night. Water was about 78 to 82 degrees. We had one late afternoon rain shower and one during the night. The rest of the time it was partly sunny. As you can see from the photos the water level is way down. I had no trouble launching at Halls Crossing but the ramp has been narrowed down at waters edge. Those of you launching at Bullfrog might want to check the Wayne's Word Message Boards, Main Forum, Lake Powell Recreation for Bullfrog ramp updates. http://www.wayneswords.com/ I think the main ramp is about to come out of the water. I think Jody is trying to stay current on this and will probably update us with what he hears.
We went north on this four day trip up to about Trachyte Canyon about 5 miles before Hite. Being Labor Day Weekend most of the beaches in the side canyons had boats or tents on them every night. We had no trouble finding spots along the main channel. I saw a pretty good beach in Forgotten Canyon but with the lake down it did not look like we would be able to get to the beaches we used in 2010 and 2011. I was not able to make last falls gathering. The Explorer Canyon beach up the Escalante Arm is not reachable this year either. Jody and I discovered that in April.
We are probably not going to be able to get up into Oak Canyon and will have to use one of the beaches as you come into the bay. There was a spot by the floating pump out Jody, Clint & Amy and Sue & I used in April, that worked out pretty good. We will just have to see what things look like when we all get there.
Sue and I are planning on launching at Halls Crossing around noon on Thursday the 19th, we will stop at The Rincon that night and make are way to Oak Canyon probably Friday or Saturday. Looking forwarding to seeing some old faces and hope to meet some new ones. Hope everyone has no problems on the way to Powell and arrives safely.

Here's some old pictures of the low lake levels and Bullfrog. You might have to go to the left side of the ramp to get in to deeper water.
Don't know why they didn't move the dock to where it has been before.
This one is today a little grainy getting dark.

Chris
My wife Diane and I are coming from Northern California and have planned to attend the Lake Powell gathering this year. This will be our first time with this group and the first time on Lake Powell. Therefore, we are taking Tony and Diane from C-View's advise and seek to meet up with you. If you are agreeable for us to meet with you, could you please advise on what harbor and date you are launching?
Thank you very much.
