So what say the pub? would you consider a anchor out only event? No dock No showers or rest room ( except what you bring) and cook out on the beach for dinner?? |
Tom, I like the idea, but I'll probably be in Clayoquot Sound or Barkley Sound during this gathering.
Spencer Spit has lots of space for anchoring and would be a good choice. Also plenty of space to gather ashore. Sucia would also be excellent, with tons of buoys, linear moorings, and some dock space (first come, first served). Sucia also has some nice gathering areas for groups, including BBQs and fire pits.
Jones Island could also be a good spot, although there isn't as much room for boats to anchor at Jones as there is at Sucia.
Other options...English Camp, Cypress, Matia, Barnes, Clark, Stuart...and I'm sure others that I've forgotten. Good luck! _________________ My boating blog...http://samlandsman.blogspot.com/ |

Tom,
Regarding an anchor only gathering; not for us. That would pretty much eliminate the "together" part of the gathering. _________________ Patti and Barry

the only problem I see with your idea to anchor out and have a meal on the beach is that you are limiting it to boats with dingys or whatever you have to get yourselves to the beach. _________________ Roger on the "SENSEI"

As host I would be more then happy to play taxi in my dingy, but I see your point that it would limit the crowd.
We had a really good time last year and hope to have a few more people this year. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Tom:
At the last LaConner gathering the group put together a pot luck, using tables, etc. provided by the Port of Skagit. Seemed to go over pretty well, although the ladies did most of the work.
One of the chef's in Mount Vernon (Arnie Anzaldua 360 630 6035) in his spare time operates a Texas BBQ trailer, reportedly of a quality to die for. What would you and the group think about having him or someone like him, put on the main course for that event?
Not sure what the cost would be, but would guess $10 - $20 per head... without the beer.
If the group was large enough and enthusiastic about doing this, I might be able to get the Port of Skagit to make a donation toward the cost under the promotion budget.

Sorry for the late response, did not see this until now for some reason.
As much as I would like to do a anchor out only event I think I'm the only one. So I am thinking of a Friday and Saturday at La conner same as last year. Sunday Susan and I will head out to Spencer spit for a dinner on the beach for who ever whats to come.
as for your BBQ Idea? I like the idea but I like the pot luck too. What say the pub?? |

You dont count, you sold your boat. But you could come stay at the potlach rv park, which is right across the street from the marina. Ok I guess you do count. |

Upon second thought, you can drive to LaConner in your car and eat BBQ anytime you want regardless of WX, but you cannot at all readily do the same with a picnic at Spencer Spit SP...that is a more unique experience and requires a boat and decent conditions.
This being the case, Spencer Spit is probably a better all round choice for a spring/ summer trip for a boating Group. i will hold off on approaching the Port staff on the BBQ idea. Maybe at a another time.
Thanks for the feedback.
