This video shows our going through Piehle Passage from the protected waters of Slocum Arm, Khaz Bay in the Chichagof Island, designated wilderness to the open waters of the Gulf of Alaska on our way south to Sitka, Alaska during our three month summer cruise last spring & early summer.

For those of you who perhaps thought an IPad alone might be fine for navigating areas like this are you still so inclined after viewing this video. I have found it to be great in the more traveled areas & use it most of the time now wherever we are, but always in conjuction with another gps chart as I have found it by far the most inaccurate for actual boat placement in the more remote locations. It also is more prone to lose the sat connection, though both my Garmins will at times too, just not as often. This video showing the IPad & other charts while navigating a complicated route with multiple hazards was the main purpose in posting this particular video

Thanks for the video and insite into using more than 1 chartplotter.
My wife already calls me a gadget geek!
So far in the Great Lakes Region where I boat I have found my Standard Horizon to be pretty accurate. I have the gold chip - which is the middle 1.
Some areas I've boated have hundreds of small islands - they can all start to look alike after a while. As a backup to my plotter I carry a handheld Madgellen (no charts) but I always turn it on and leave a bread crumb trail that can be followed back if neccesary.
You got me thinking maybe I should break down and buy a chip for it!

Rob, your welcome & glad you enjoyed the video
The Two small Garmins & the IPad in combination are a major help to me now for some of the more difficult & challenging passages. I like to set one Garmin screen for detail the other backed off for an overview & the IPad to quickly adjust screen for a variety of views for course changes & planning while underway. What a advantage we have now over boaters in these waters just a few years ago. In the video you can see how Jolee & I are trying to make sense out of the cruising book directions & not doing very well at it. There is no way with our very little boating experience & knowledge of the Southeast Alaska waters that we could have navigated to many of the places we now know very well without the GPS & electronic charts.
