I'm ready to upgrade to radar. The Furuno 1623 seems to be the base model and has good reviews.
Does any one know of a killer deal on one?
I have looked on craigslist and ebay for the older model 1621, but they are hard to find. When I do find one, it is snached up quickly, like a C-Dory.
Any suggestions on other radar systems? I want a stand alone unit. _________________ Terry, Ann & Chloe

A Furuno 1623 radar is a very good stand alone radar and from what I can see is the cheapest of them all. So I'm going to recommend you get one, and not a used one off e-bay. They're a useful safety device, and you don't want it to die just when you need it.
Where are you planning to use the boat, in the ocean, in the Columbia, or? I assume that the radar would be there for fog, and in fog you would want to know your position as well what's there. So I'm also going to ask you what you're using for a chart potter. On Journey On, we use the chart plotter a lot more than the radar; each in it's place. You might look at a cheap combined unit (though they're not cheap to me,) or if you can use a PC, set that up to be the navigation center.
GPS units are cheap and both the radar and plotter use them.

Like you i made the decision to get a furuno 1623 radar and then spent months looking on ebay and craigslist to find a used one. After no success I decided to get a new one. I wasn't able to find killer deal on one, the prices seemed to be pretty similar where ever I looked.
I can tell you it has been wonderful to have. Like many have suggested on this site I always use it, even when the weather is 'nice' so we are be ready when we are in the less than ideal conditions.
Good luck

Boris, the 1623 sounds like a good unit. I have an older Garmin 172C that has been very reliable. We do most of our boating in the San Juans & Gulf Is. This summer we are going to Desolation Sound and I have been dreaming about the inside passage.
Chip. Recently I was on a friends boat that had the radar running. It seemed real intuitive. I would like to figure it out before I need it.

Send Matt Unique a PM and see what he can do for you. He does have an on line store at: http://www.commercialcaptains.com
The GPS store, and Jim at BOE are some of the more public sources which have good deals.
I agree--get a new one, rather than take a chance for a few hundred bucks.
The 1715 will have better resolution as well as a slightly larger screen, if you want to pay the extra $300. _________________ Bob Austin

Terry
I have the Furuno 1715 and feel that the extra money was well worth it. Also, I got mine thru the GPS Store. As stated they are all real real close as far as price goes, even with shipping costs. I went with the GPS store only because they had it in stock when I pulled the trigger. Alot of the places that I checked online and locally were out of stock. But that was a year ago. _________________ Chuck

Since Peter has let the cat out of the bag. Yes I am very excited about the Furuno.
Just goes to show, the best part of owning a C-Dory is the friends we've made thru the C-Brats.
Thank you Peter.

Sorry Terry if I jumped the gun. But I'm very happy to be able to sell you the unit. It's in great shape.
