With much preparation & no small amount of work we’re finally ready to head north tomorrow morning to Skagway, Alaska. With the fuel prices so high we have opted out of doing both the Prince William Sound & Southeast Alaska this year, but are still leaving early in the season so as to see Southeast Alaska for once in late April & early May period with plans of staying three months. April & May are statistically the two driest months of the year with the storms that do make it in being on average stronger. Have been following the Canadian weather & for the drive north it looks as if we might have a window without encountering major snow & wind by leaving tomorrow & making the drive there in five days. We have plenty of blankets & are set for some undoubtedly cold nights while using the Hunkydory as a Camper on the road.

This is how we are set to go & the 2nd photo shows boat rock protection for the Alaska Highway.

Hi Jay and Jo- Lee,

Good luck and safe travels. I'll be checking here for updates and perhaps we'll cross wakes when I'm in SE Alaska towards the end of your trip.

Peter, would be great to chat some over a good cup, but won't quite be making Whitehorse. We turn off at Jakes Corner where the Atlin road starts & take the short cut through Tagish to Carcross & then Skagway.

George, following our return from Alaska do hope to make the Lake Powell Gathering & looking forward to hearing more of your travels.

All, thanks for the good wishes & Jim will keep that center window shut tight especially around rapids Laughing

Jay

SE Alaska in April and May can be real nice but also can hold some unexpected surprises. Remember several years ago leaving Skagway for Juneau in a friends boat for the Juneau folk festival, weather was nice in Skagway but by the time we got to Berners Bay we were in a blinding snow storm and over a foot of snow on our decks. On the return trip 4 days later we were in sunny warm weather. Remote anchorages are almost always empty but usually quite cool in the evening as the cold winds off the mountains, that are still covered in snow blow down into bays. The nice thing is that many animals have moved down to the shoreline at this time of year so wildlife sightings are quite good.
Yes the price of gas in the North is high we are sitting at $1.35 a liter right now with another expected increase before summer.

Have a safe drive north. If you get down to Juneau again , give us a call. We have moved since we last saw you a few years ago. We live on Indian Cove now, just a couple miles N of Auke Bay. The cove is located on the W side of Indian Cape, which sits between us and the State ferry terminal. The cove has a nice flat bottom and you can anchor right in front of the house or use our mooring. You can use my truck to tour around, get supplies etc. We could also make the boat trailer available should you need to haul out for anything. Let us know. We have had gorgeous weather for the past few weeks with virtually no rain and clear skies til it clouded up today. Steve and Colleen

I have four wishes for you both.
One: I hope you don't have to put on any more frozen clothes, ever.
Two: I hope you heater always works with out you having to repair it.
Three: I hope you just have to take pictures of the bears.
Four: We wish we could be there and that you return safe and sound.

Ginny and Dave
