We leave tomorrow to cruise the Panama Canal. Not on the C-Dory (sad to say - hard to figure how to do that) but not on a cruise ship either. We will travel on a catamaran with about 20 others.
Then to the rain forest (with a zip line), village time with local folks, snorkeling on both Atlantic and Pacific Panamanian reefs, and some time in Cartagena, Columbia. Home for the Holidays in a rental cabin with family high in the snowy Rockies (what a contrast from sloths, monkeys, and trogons in the rain forest). _________________ El and Bill (former live-aboards)

Bill,
Man,you folks sure do get around. Cartagena wasn't that city in the movie Romacing the Stone with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner? Have a safe trip, hope you enjoy the food and the time with the locals. Don't get kidnapped, well you would have to be called adult knapped if it actually happens.

That sounds like fun trip! Well, except that whole zip-line thing... the idea of a bosun's seat used to make my hind end pucker up (glad the C-Dory doesn't have a mast ).
Have a great time - we'll be looking forward to reading about it.
Best wishes,

Have fun, we have been thru the canal 3 times in our own boats, and enjoyed the Islands and towns on both sides of the Canal. Cristobal has a bad reputation, but most likely you will not stop there. _________________ Bob Austin

El and Bill,
Have a great trip. My four years in Canal Zone and Chile -- and countries in between -- bring back memories. Before air conditioning and rare electricity. OooooHH. "Don't swim with sharks!!"

El and Bill,
Enjoy. What a wonderful trip, (well I'm with Jim on the zip line thing). If I can't reach it standing on the ground, I probably don't need it, Unless it's Mango.

Have a fantastic time! Dorothy and I were in Costa Rica back in March. One of our tour colleagues lost part of the end of a finger in a zip line pulley. Soooo, a word to the wise. We envy you your travels!

Sounds like fun. I was on a National Geographic cruise in the Galapagos in September and several of the other guests had done Panama Canal cruises and raved about them. Zip lining is fun too...I went in Australia with family (including my ~80 year old grandmother) and will probably go again in Costa Rica this spring. You'll have a great time, can't wait to hear about it. _________________ My boating blog...http://samlandsman.blogspot.com/ |

Hi Bill and El.
We went through on one of the Blount Small Ships. Had a daytime transit.
The best part of the trip was a tour of Panama City with a local cab driver. We tried to go to a Zoo, but the Zoo was closed. The driver said he would take us a tour and we could pay him what it was worth after the trip. About 4 hours later we paid him $40.00 and he wanted to give us change! We did not take the change and we had a good time..
Have fun. God Bless.

Great cruise thru the Panama Canal on a catamaran before Christmas - cruised slowly in the days and anchored nights in Gatun Lake or mangrove tributary rivers to walk rain forests in the day looking (and seeing interesting tropical birds) and visiting by seyvlor an Embira village to see native dancing and eat some good meals.
Snorkeled reefs on the Caribbean coast and out to some offshore islands in the Pacific before and after the cruise. Up to Anton Valley to look for ( and find) some tiny frogs and toads.
After time in Panama City and Colon, we headed to Columbia to enjoy pre-Christmas color in Cartagena. Nighttime dancing and Carib. music in brightly lit parks at night was a joy.
Then home to Colorado for Christmas with family and up to a cabin high in the sunny Rockies with them for days before and including New Years. Good time together. Happy New Year all! |
